Video: New Sonic Unleashed Trailer Is Remarkably Speedy
Hot-diggity-dog, is that Hedgehog moving fast!
Just when I thought the Sonic series had forgotten what made them so pleasurable in the first place, Sonic Team ships out a new video for Sonic Unleashed that is simply saturated in speed. Maybe they have tapped into some secretive Blast Processing techniques from their Genesis days to make it jet along so quickly?
Now, the new question is whether the alluded "Were-Sonic" sequences will unnecessarily bog down the action. I can only hope that they don't, because what I'm seeing here is looking like a complete success.

I... I'm not sure my eyes caught that.
-mutters to self-
I will NOT get my hopes up for this... I will NOT get my hopes up for this... I will NOT be disappointed...
The Sonic team is incapable of learning...
...
But I so badly want this to be as fun as the Genesis games...
Well, it certainly LOOKS cool, but I don't see much gameplay going on. He was destroying enemies just by running straight into them! And did I see an "event sequence" where you simply press either LB or RB when the screen tells you to? Meh.
Wow.... that actually looked pretty damn good.
Richie's on the mark in my opinion. The game looks great. Whatever they're doing with their engine to make it look that nice and that fast is impressive.
But the reason the Genesis games were so good wasn't because you couldn't see anything. Sure there were sections of levels where you went "wow, Sonic's so cool because he can do loops and run across water!" but ultimately it was the platforming action that was fun. And that's what games like this are missing. I want to say "Mario, but a bit faster" but that might take away from Sonic a little too much.
I don't want to start a level, walk off a ramp, and the whole level flies by me. And the only reason I'm still holding the controller is because I'm waiting for the quicktime event to tell me to hit the X button.
My hopes are ridiculously low for this game since I'm betting the marketing machine will keep showing speed sections and nothing about the rest of it. (If there is a "rest of it.") So Sonic Team convinced me they can make a good engine... But have they improved at all at game design? We'll have to wait and see.
