Diablo 3: The Tease Ends, The Wait Begins

After spending all last week with a mysterious, icy spash page, Blizzard finally answered many prayers last night by announcing Diablo 3 at their annual Worldwide Invitational. You can uncross your fingers now.
Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn. When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells - and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself....
Like Starcraft 2, at first glance you might be fooled into thinking that not much has changed for the franchise, but watching the full 20 minute gameplay video should make you feel ridiculous and ashamed of yourself for ever thinking that. The environment looks to play a much larger role in the game, and the enemies seem more numerous and fluid. Gameplay looks to be faster, with the edition of a new quick menu bar, but deeper, with all new skill trees and new ways to combine them. Only two of five classes were shown: the classic Barbarian, who is definitely looking 20 years older, and the brand new Witch Doctor, who seems to play like a combination of the Necromancer and the Druid. All characters will be playable as either a male or female, although there's no information whether gender will have any affect on stats or usable items.
There's no word on a release date, and considering Blizzard's release schedule is, at best, glacial, don't hold your breath. Still, the homepage linked below is surprisingly well stocked with information and screenshots (check out Deckard Cain's journal for a neat synopsis of the last two games), and expect a fairly steady trickle of information as the months (and years?) tick away. Check out the cinematic trailer, as well as almost 20 minutes of gameplay, after the break.
