Rumorama: 40GB PS3 Backwards Compatibility In October

That's right, this little rumor has popped up again. I'm not going to brush this off though, after Bioshock is finally receiving a confirmed PS3 release, it is hard to tell what may or may not happen with the system.
Sony has been semi-wishy washy about the backwards compatibility on the PS3 for awhile now. First it was there, then it wasn't then it was half there and frankly, I'm getting tired of trying to remember what has what where. Who is on first, what? Anyway, It is being speculated that the 40GB Playstation 3 is getting backwards compatibility in the October update.
According to German game site InPlayStation, an October firmware update for the PS3 will bring full b/c for PS2 games. Now, Sony has said they plan to make PS2 games downloadable on the Network at some point, so perhaps this is a very plausible rumor.
Yea, I know, lets take this with a grain of salt. I know the PS3 is a powerful system and all, but considering that the best full software emulation on PCs can only pull between 5~12 FPS on a good day, I'm a little wary that the PS3 can do it. Maybe they've written some massive multi-threaded emulation behemoth, I don't know, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Seriously, if it is that important to you, snag a 80GB. Most of the titles you'll want to play will work and if that is not good enough, eBay a 60GB. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to return to fantasizing about the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle.
Backwards Compatibility Returns To 40GB PS3 This October? [PS3 News]

Hooray! This is great news/rumor and hopefully a sign of things to come to all models of the PS3 (and not just for those of us lucky enough to have PS2 hardware inside our PS3s to begin with). The PS2 is still getting games worth picking up and just about any PS3 gamer has missed at least a few hidden gems in the PS2 catalog.
It's important to me because my PS2 is broken. And I'd rather not spend money on multiple systems piling up under my tv, especially when I can use a wireless PS3 controller to play my games.
This is sweet, just making me more excited to eventually own my very own PS3. But I really hope there'll be a slim dualshock version out by the time I need to get it: FFXIII
The PS3 already does software emulation,
the 80 gig Triples do not have the emotion engine hardware and just use software emulation to run ps2 games
plus PC architecture emulating PPC architecture is very different from PPC to PPC emulation methinks
probably why pee cees are pumpin out 15fps or w/e

@elohel: Actually, very little of PS2 emulation is actually emulating the CPU. Most of it is juggling all the secondary parallel hardware like the geometry hardware and onboard decoders and such.
And FYI the PS2 runs a MIPS 5900, not a PPC core. Same design concept, different processor core.
Great. Another version of the PS3. They really need to like...pick out what they're going to do. I really hope the next generation of consoles goes back to either just having one version of the console, or keeping different versions on the market, but not constantly adding and discontinuing the older models. Every time I think about getting one of these, another pops up.
wikipedia ftw
FFS sony, pull your heads out your asses and sort it out!!!
This must be the most retarded generation of consoles with updates and hardware changes.
I feel totally ripped off by Microsoft as I paid full price for my launch XBOX360 to then have a HDMI version released later on at a cheaper price and an elite edition and bigger harddrives... it doesnt end.
And I feel sorry for all those PS3 buyers... No exact reason, just sorry you bought one :P (hehehe sorry)
So my hat goes off to the Wii. Apart from a slight chip change somewhere along the line my launch console is just the same as if I'd bought one last week. And hey, its still costs the same meaning I don't feel ripped off.
Here's my advice to the manufacturers: Develop your console fully before launch, don't slap out a half hearted attempt to then try and pick up the pieces later to the expense of the consumer.
And my advice to the consumer: Dont buy a console at launch. Simple.

I think Sony deserves that everybody with a 40gb PS3, starts modding that to play copied games... why? that´s simple:I got (like a lot of people) a huge collection of PS2 games (complete MGS series for example)... couldn´t buy a 80gb PS3 when they launched that on Europe, and now I can´t find any (yes, tried ebay, but it disappears like hot cakes) in the shops.I bought a 40gb instead. And now I have 2 PS3 games( FEAR and GTA4...waiting for MGS4) and a huge useless collection of games.ORIGINALS.This is my reward for not modding my PS2 to play pirate games?!specially because the european version didn´t have the Emotion chip, just a emulation software, so since the beggining Sony "wasn´t in the mood" to put a BC on the 40gb model...they treated us, gamers, not casual gamers, with disrespect: "Oh, forget about Silent Hill 2 or Okami...we´ll release at least 20 FPS in the next year...you gonna have a lot to play".
