Runes Of Magic: The Latest Free-To-Play MMO

runesofmag.jpg

I am as big a fan of free-to-play (or just plain free) MMOs as you're like to find this side of the Kuiper Belt. Mix in the thrill of free stuff with the aboriginal love a gay gamer such as myself feels for RPGs, add just a dash of "The Future" and you've got the recipe for the next generation of free-to-play MMOs.

I just updated my Dungeon Runners software last night and am feeling the love for "MMO 2.0" - a world in which game designers build me gorgeous online RPGs and then ask for no money at all. It's win/win! Or... it's win/lose in my favor. Whatever.

Cut to German developer Frogster Interactive, developer of Runes of Magic, a particularly gorgeous looking free-to-play MMO that should see the light of day later this year.

Claiming over 600 quests and a two-tiered class system that sees characters selecting two classes out of a total of six (think Guild Wars, the original modern free-to-play MMO), combo attacks, private homes, extensive crafting and rep systems as well as PvP, Rune of Magic will be on my radar this year. Check out the official site for this just-announced MMO.

PRESS RELEASE
Runes of Magic - The future of free2play MMOs

New Free-to-Play-MMOG with countless features available before Christmas

With an extensive range of features Runes of Magic prepares to redefine the standard of free-to-play MMO games. The German version of the sophisticated fantasy adventure will come to light even before Christmas 2008. The English version will be released soon afterwards. Even at the beginning Runes of Magic conveys its absorbing story in over 600 quests embedded in an atmospheric world. Players can choose from six main classes. Combined with a secondary class they dispose of 36 individual character classes over all. All characters possess unique skills with impressive combo attacks and can use mounts in the later stages of game play. A particularly attractive feature for guilds and even players is the possibility to arrange their own virtual homes with individual furnishing. Thanks to an extensive crafting and reputation system, thrilling PVP as well as demanding dungeons and boss-monsters no wishes remain unsatisfied. MMO fans can find first pictures and a registration form for the newsletter on the official teaser site www.runesofmagic.com.

Runes of Magic - a world full of wizardry and adventure
In Runes of Magic players explore and discover a magical realm full of wonders and ancient riddles. On their way from simple novice to famous hero, they will always be accompanied by magical runes and potent oracles which are fragments of the divine book Taborea. In Runes of Magic players should use the rune stone wisely, for they might also lure them to a path of destruction. But legend has it, that he, who embraces the oracle and acquires its might, will gain absolute power over the future. It is now up to the player, to write on the history of the world.

To do that, players have access to a dual class system which allows them to freely combine their main and secondary classes, in order to freely build a character the way they want. On their way through Taborea, they learn professions and special skills to forge mighty armor and weaponry or to enhance them. After a hard day of labor players can relax in their own homes, which they can arrange any way they want. In addition they have access to a dynamic item and rune system, as well as three gathering and eight crafting professions. Dangerous dungeons, raids and an extensive PVP system challenge PC heros in the long run.

The Taiwanese developers of Runewaker Entertainment Ltd. grew up in the USA and were enthusiastic "Ultima Online" and "World of Warcraft" players. Runes of Magic was developed in a time frame of three years according to western MMO standards. Runemaker will provide new challenges for players every three to four months with free add-ons and updates.

Frogster Interactive Pictures AG strives to release both the European-English version and the American version at the same time. Concerning the US version Frogster currently looking for a qualified US-Publisher.

Thankfully this was mentioned I really dislike mouse only controls which seems to be very standard with Free-To-Play MMOs

I kicked Dungeon Runners off my PC. In fact, I don't play MMOs at all. I enjoyed playing WOW Beta, but by the end of it, I had seen almost 2/3rds of the entire horde continent, and grind was starting to set in. That is usually when I stop playing these games.

Now, free MMOs usually copy only the grind portion from their commercial counterparts, not having the manpower and skill to recreate the immersive atmosphere. I'd rather play offline MMOs like Gothic (greatest Action-RPG ever!) and the Elder Scrolls.

Also, spammer right above me...

This is lame... why is game trailers advertising free MMO's like they are the best thing since sliced bread, when they already have the damn ads popping up all over the site?
