Sony Building 'Break-Apart' PS3 Controller

I remember trying to describe the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo to an uninitiated gamer some time back, and I described it as "basically a regular controller that's broken in two pieces, such that you hold the stick in one hand and the face buttons in the other." I thought it was a pretty simple explanation of what might otherwise be a difficult concept to describe.
Apparently Sony was eavesdropping on me, because they've gone and developed a "break apart" controller that functions as a traditional gamepad while also being able to split itself in two, a-la Wiimote and Nunchuck. Naturally, the device features motion sensing abilities as well.
Sony may or may not make an official announcement sometime soon, but GamesIndustry.biz claims that "working units have already been supplied to certain developer partners."
From motion to rumble and back again? Did 2007 just loop, or am I having a mild stroke? What's with Sony and Microsoft having such blatant Wii envy? Can the gaming market really support three very similar Wii-type innovations? Talk to me.

Well you can't deny Nintendo has had an innovation streak that the other, particularly Sony seem to follow.
Then again when they compete we, the consumer, win!

"three very similar innovations" !?!???
I think you mean ONE innovation, introduced, scoffed at, then ultimately copied by second-raters. Not the same thing.
"We, the consumer win"???????? *looks at obsolete Sixaxis, then tries to buy £50 quid replacement DualShock3s, but can't yet in Europe / Australia.*
Not really feeling the "Win" here, guys.
How did MS emulate the Wii? Iirc, rumble was popularised with the PS1 Dual Shock controller, and they don't have any split-apart or motion sensing parts.
Some gamers don't like how developers have implemented the Wii-mote in the more traditional games (silly repetitive motions that get in the way of enjoying the game). I know I wouldn't be happy if my PS3 games started to use the controller like a Wii-mote. However, I do like how the sixaxis brings another dimension to traditional gaming...like guiding weapons with aftertouch. At the end of the day, I like each platform for its uniqueness...not because of how well they copy each other.
it would be awsome. i would have to stop thinking about purchasing a wii. i hope it works out cause the wii has amazing controls but limited capabilities. i'm exited.
Sony`s trying something new... what a surprise... *headdesk*
This was already semi-debunked on Kotaku, like yesterday at lunchtime:
