Very Focused Thieves Steal Only PS3

Some very determined thieves broke into a home in Los Angeles, and stole a PlayStation 3. See, now that wouldn't be terribly unusual, but it was also a home invasion, and the victims were tied up and terrorized before the theft. On Sunday evening, two armed gunmen entered the Lakewood house through an unlocked screen door while two men and a woman were watching the Lakers game inside. Apparently the victims were made to lie on the floor and tied up with duct tape, and one suffered a minor injury when struck on the head with a gun. The house was ransacked, but the only thing missing was the PS3. Go figure. Was there really nothing else of value in the entire place? What about the TV they were watching? A DVD player? Jewelry? Either these thieves were just very goal-oriented, or they just weren't trying very hard.

I feel sorry for the couple I really do. That would be a horrible experience to have to live through, but even so, I still have to say this. Has anyone consider the possibility that it was just Sony's media team trying to advertise the system by stealing one? Maybe they're just trying to show that the system actually has some value. Normally I would think the robbers were just stupid, but having seen the adds for PS3 and knowing how desperate Sony is to prove the value of their system, who knows...
Anyways, I hope no one has read this far and thinks I'm serious. I'm not. I don't do serious. Seriously though, I want to say this. Systems are stolen all the time. I may live in a lousy neighborhood, but people steal each others 360's all the time. This couple was home which sucks, but I don't see how this is really of any importance (Even in a gaming news forum) The only thing shocking about this is that it was a PS3.
Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3. It's an awesome way to watch Blue Ray movies. The problem is just that's all I use it for. I use my Wii and 360 for gaming. I work in a video game retail store, and I don't think I could convince someone to steal a ps3 if I tried. Even if I did they wouldn't get that far. (They're heavy! Don't ever try to run with one!) Plus they just don't have the demand that the 360's have had.
The system is the best as far as graphics and power, and although not enough for Kojima (Damn you are a God!) Blue Ray is by far a superior format! I think the lack of demand boils down to couple of little things.
One, I really think up until recently Sony has really really really failed at selling the value of their system. Their add campaign has been weak at best, and they have really not had enough exclusive system selling content. The Wii has the fact it's unique, and 360 has Halo 3 (Not a fan myself, but it can't be denied that it was a system selling game) They also have been perceived as being more expensive. (Although really their isn't much of a price difference between any of the three systems*)
With all that said, I think Sony's time is coming. With Metal Gear Solid looking to be an amazing gaming experience, plus with both Final Fantasy XIII games only a year or two (or three or four) away, I think Sony is going to turn things around. With their system actually wanted by consumers, I wouldn't be surprised to see the amount of stolen ps3 consoles go up. I just hope that doesn't mean the number of articles on this site about stolen PS3's go up...
*If you buy a wii and enough controllers and accessories so you and 3 of your friends can play (It really is a party/social/family oriented system) it gets really close to the price of a PS3 (Which is the opposite of a social system)
Hulkling, why compare the price of a Wii plus 4 Wiimotes, to the price of a PS3 which includes ONE now-obsolete sixaxis!?
Shouldn't one compare like with like? How much for a PS3 and four DualShock3s?? A feckin' fortune.
love your writing style, though. Seriously. Well, not too seriously, obviously :-)

Wow Hulkling. Just wow. You point out that a Wii plus four Wiimotes costs nearly the price of a low-end PS3... what about factoring in that a PS3 comes with a need-to-replace-it-as-soon-as-it-comes-out-of-the-box-because it's-now-obsolete Sixaxis? Fifty quid a pop for them controllers..at least it will be when they finally release them here in Europe. Wiimotes thirty quid including a game (albeit a lame one which you can trade-in later).
A PS3 plus four Dualshock3s would cost hundreds and hundreds more than a Wii plus four Wiimotes...
I'm loving your writing style though, seriously. Well, maybe not seriously :-)
You are very much right. Honestly though who needs 4 PS3 controllers? Still, buying even two Dualshock 3's definitely jacks up the price quite a bit.
