Video: Dragon Quest V

I have a confession to make. I had never played a Dragon Quest game before. I know, I know. But then I got Dragon Quest VIII for Christmas and I fell in love. The cell-shaded graphics were beautiful, and the story was involving, and the traditional RPG action was pitch-perfect. So it is with great pleasure I anticipate the upcoming remakes for the Nintendo DS of Dragon Quests IV, V and VI. Here, I present to you the trailer for Dragon Quest V, and though I don't understand a lick of Japanese, it seems to be presenting the various supporting cast members. Who cares, really. Just take a look at those impressive 3D environments, traditional RPG action and sprites. Sprites, I tell ya! (And boy, that lead character grows up real nice, eh?) Just FYI, Dragon Quest IV is due out in the US in September, and the other two to follow... at some point.

Wow, that does look quite amazing. DQVIII was my first (and so far only) experience with the series, too, and I absolutely loved that game. So I can't wait for this. Oh, Square Enix, you have been spoiling me lately!

I really want an update on DQIX from them soon, though.

I feel it is my duty to warn you both, and anyone else who might not know, that the older DragonQuests are not for the faint of heart. I cannot personally speak for V (or much of VI, though I did briefly play an emulated version), but these games are unforgiving, somewhat monotonous exercises in frustration. DQVIII was somewhat lauded not only for it's stunning graphics (that kept Toriyama's feel), but also for making the games a little more approachable. These olders one? Not so much.

Don't get me wrong, I am eagerly awaiting them (though not as much as IV, IV is one of my favorite RPGs ever, and me and my friend Julia used to play it simultaneously (well her for an hour, and then me) back-to-back over and over), but I am keeping my NDS Action Replay nearby for when I decide I am sick of leveling and am ready to get on with it already.

Be warned!

DQ5 is nowhere near as unforgiving and monotonous as the earlier installments. While the game is quite long (you progress through three generations), the story was always entertaining and seemed to move along at a comfortable pace. The battle system is fairly quick, has great music (my personal favorite), and shares a few similarities to DQ8 (e.g., this is the first DQ game that had boomerangs/whips attack multiple enemies). There isn't any kind of class change or skill point system, but you do get plenty of people to join, and you can also "convince" feral monsters to fight alongside your party.

Honestly, if you liked DQ8, you'll probably like this one as well. It's worth a try, at least.
