Video: Resident Evil 5 "Captivate 08" Trailer
In case you missed it this weekend, here's the new Resident Evil V Trailer out of Capcom's Captivate '08!
Ah, Las Plagas, how I've missed you. This trailer for Resident Evil 5 reminds us that there's something absurd yet viscerally appealing about seeing a man's head explode and watching a giant earwig pop out of his neck. It also reminds me I should probably clean the garage. There's a lot that will look familiar to fans of Resident Evil 4, but that's not really a criticism in this case. I'm not sure whether the footage will fan or douse the flames of racism, but from the brief snippets of dialog, it seems apparent that the game has deeper themes than just shooting zombies and giant bugs.
You also get a first look at what is likely the character used in the recently announced co-op for the game, and while it's not the familiar face I'm sure some of you were hoping for, I think most folks (especially our friends at Lesbian Gamers) will be pleased.

Again with the chainsaw? Not very original, is it?
And I want Umbrella to return dammit!
The chainsaw is like a trademark for their departure from 3rd person to over the shoulder perspective gameplay. Original? You have to remember that this game inspired Cliffy B. to make Gears of War.
Nexus - Some are speculating that the leach-y thing at the very end of the video is hinting at the return of Umbrella in some way.
And let me get this straight - you're complaining about the originality of the chainsaw guy, which has been in one Resident Evil game and was probably included here mainly as an homage to RE4. At the same time you want a return to the days of Umbrella, which got RE 1-3, Code Veronica, and a number of other spin-offs to tell its story. You're certainly within your rights to want Umbrella and all that baggage to make a return to the series, but I don't think that would help the game be any more "original."
:P
You're right, it is kind of hypocritical of me.
I don't mind the chainsaw that much, it's just something that immediatly struck me as remeniscent of the previous game. And frankly I don't really like the changes RE4 introduced (over-the-shoulder perspective, no Umbrella), so I was probably just looking for something to harp on.
umbrella died in the previous games thats why there was not umbrella in them. Wesker and Ada were originally from a different organization so it fits you know. I think this will both fan arguments of racism and inclusion cause although now we have more black zombie we dont really have a black main character. Yes shes probably black but she is light skinned and people might bring about the argument that "since she is light skinned the lighter you are the better you are." So either way drama!!!!
Nexus, I kinda miss Umbrella as well. I feel like I invested in Umbrella's story and was starting to enjoy their zany administrative practices, but they were just smothered in the night by the RE4 intro.
Also, does Chris seem to be getting younger as the RE time line marches forward? He is certainly getting more attractive!
First of all, I can shamelessly say that Chris is looking damn fine. He monologues strangely, though.
Everything looks pretty much to be RE4 re-skinned, complete with plagas, dogs, and chainsaw man. Though it's kind of interesting to see that when the dogs attack Chris, they sort of cling to him while in previous games they've always knocked you down. The 'roids worked, eh?
As people have mentioned before, I'm disappointed that so far nothing related to Umbrella looks discernable. I'm hoping that RE4 didn't throw the storyline too off. I guess it's too early on to be releasing any real spoilers.
I really hope that the blonde chick Chris has to rescue is Sherry. If she's some random broad like Ashley, I'll be quite upset to say the least.
Umbrella is coming back; Wesker is trying to rebuild them, as we find out in RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles.
I love Wesker.
Saw this this morning (I'm in the UK) and literally freaked out. MSN'd all my friends on MSN about it, most of whom aren't even gamers. Online co-op is gonna be awesome.
OMG finally someone mentioned the co-op mode, even though it was just a blip. am i the only who cares about this? at any rate, i was really hoping for Clair to return, all the way up until she started talking. I was like pony tail, bad assery, awwwww. it's not her. *sigh* at any rate, i'm still super stoked about co-op.
Chris looks freakin hot!
Speaking of racism anyone else noticing a genocide-esk theme? Seems like the members of S.T.A.R.S. are wiping out remote homogeneous communities across the world - RE 4 in Europe(possibly Spain), RE 5 with Africa, and I would guess if there would be a RE6 it would prob be in China or something lol. just an observation.
I don't really think the changing locations are racist at all. For the first dozen Resident Evil games, we were killing predominantly white zombies in rural American towns. Did anybody complain then about the games being racist to white people?
We've destroyed the hell out of Racoon City again and again, it's time for new locations. When they tried the training facility in Code Veronica, it still felt like we'd done it all before. To keep the games fresh Capcom is giving us truly exotic locales, like RE4 in Spain and now RE5 in Africa.
Regarding the racism controversy, I think adding the new "black" protagonists was done partly to alleviate that notion. Though it's interesting to note that the "good" black people have considerably lighter skin. It got me thinking all "Hotel Rwanda."
i don't agree or disagree with the notion of a racist theme. if you have played Uncharted, or at least seen Yahtzee's review of it, i think there are far worse "white man versus everybody" games. i also don't think spain counts, that's like them invading france. i mean for the most part, Euope is going to very white, as far as i know. Sure they may have different nationalities, but that is a different subject matter all together. i mean it's not like i am going to find Dominicans in Spain. they would just have black Spaniards. also, the girl, i didn't even know she was supposed to be black. she's lighter than I am, and I am mixed. the RE series has had characters, and zombies of all different races thus far, especially the outbreak series. finally, Africa is continent, not a country, and not everyone from Africa looks the same, like the Egyptians for example. I actually think people would have had more of a problem if they went to Africa and there was not a black person anywhere to be found.
I'm not going to say the game is racist before I even play it, but boy is it unnerving to see a bunch of savage-looking black people screaming "Africa is OUR land!" ...followed by the white man's voiceover "I knew it from the moment I arrived. There's no reason here, no humanity."
Don`t like... just as RE4. This is no RE anymore to me!
I... don't really care if this game is basically RE4 in a new location, because RE4 was absolutely amazing.
Also, if you guys think Wesker's going to sit this game out, you're flippin' nuts. Trust me, The New Umbrella will be here, somewhere. They just wouldn't want to give a giant spoiler like that.
Do we know these are Las Plagas, though? They seem to act a little differently... they don't rip people's heads open, but they do make giant gnash mouths... so it might be a new strand?
And finally, Racism? Weak card. He's in a location that's predominantly black, I'm sure there will be a storyline reason for it, and I'm sure there will be a whole buncha stuff about political strife. Let it go.
I noticed one or two non-black enemy characters in this video than in some earlier ones. Think they might've been added a bit retroactively?^_~
This game definitely presses some sensitive issues. Did anyone else think Chris' final comment to his new partner was a bit anachronistically misogynistic? O_o
lol, all of his partners have been women though. he's just being honest.
Rascism still being played on this game?
This leg of the story takes us to Africa, if we were killing seas of Caucasian zombies, it wouldn't make sense. Anyone calling the RE series rascist for having black antagonists is reading way to much into things (or possibly doing what therapists call "projecting")
i want barry burton back! he was soo hot!
