Dead Rising Wii Details Revealed!

wiidr_titlelogo.jpg

Do you really hate zombies, but own a Wii instead of an Xbox 360? Well, as the lovely Asterick mentioned recently, the hit 360 title Dead Rising is shambling its way onto Nintendo's console this winter. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (love the title) tells the story of hunky freelance journalist Frank West's struggle to survive a zombie outbreak inside a mall. And if you run out of guns and ammo to stop the horde of undead, you can pretty much use anything and everything that's not nailed down to pound on their squishy little skulls.

The story remains the same, split up into individual cases that Frank must solve in order to uncover the truth behind the zombie uprising. But the Wii version will be using the already-proven-successful RE4 Wii Edition game engine and adding some Wiimote waggle. You know, as you do when you port things onto the Wii. Capcom is also promising a better save system to achieve more seamless gameplay, but never having played the original on the 360 (I know, I know, but I got my 360 after it had already come out, and I really wanted to play Oblivion and nothing else!), I can't say whether the game was in need of that particular improvement. But I'm sure it was. Why fix something that isn't broken? Oh, and for you dress up fans, it seems that Frank's multitude of costume changes will be included as well, so you can still have him running around in his tighty-whities!

After the break, I've got Capcom's full press release, as well as a few screenshots. I knew the Wii wouldn't be able to achieve the polygon count and detail of the 360 version, but it also looks to me like there's only a fraction of the zombies on screen in this version. I played the demo, and there were gajillions of them. Here, it's just a small crowd. Might make the game easier, though!

CAPCOM® ANNOUNCES DEAD RISINGTM: CHOP TIL YOU DROP
Wii Gamers Prepare For a Zombie Invasion

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- July 21, 2008 -- Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that Dead Rising™: Chop Till You Drop is in development for the Wii™ home video game system. Based on the critically acclaimed Dead Rising™, which has sold in excess of one million units since its release in 2006, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop is scheduled to hit store shelves this Winter.

Taking advantage of the same proven technology that brought Resident Evil® 4 so successfully to Wii, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop delivers a more immersive, intuitive and interactive experience as players use the Wii Remote to shoot, slash and bludgeon their way through a zombie infested shopping mall, fighting for survival.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance journalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. Frank escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping centre and its varied stores offering an endless supply of real and makeshift weapons to fight off the flesh-hungry mob. If Frank is running low on health he can pay a visit to one of the many restaurants or cafes for a meal in order to restore his energy and continue the fight.

The game is split into a series of individual cases, all of which Frank must complete in order to gain vital information that will allow him to piece together the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. In addition to the cases, players will be faced with the dilemma of deciding the rescue priority of the residents of Wilamette who also sought sanctuary in the mall. Depending on the player's skill, some may not be so fortunate as each rescue needs to be undertaken in a set time period, therefore players may need to delay completion of a case in order to save a fellow human.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop's infectious humor delivers some welcome relief from the incessant tide of zombies with players able to dress Frank up in a variety of comedic costumes and take on the undead hordes with a selection of improvised and sometimes highly ineffective weapons such as a toy sword or a football.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop includes the following features:
• Utilizes the same engine as Resident Evil 4 Wii edition.
• New level of interaction - aim and fire guns, swing and throw weapons and shake off zombie attacks with added Wii Remote functionality
• Huge environment - expansive indoor and outdoor areas of the mall provide a variety of different locations to explore
• Improved save functionality allows for more seamless gameplay
• Hoards of enemies on screen at once resulting in non-stop, pulse-pounding action
• Anything in the mall is at Frank's disposal
• Grab environmental objects like umbrellas and benches to use as improvised weapons
• Snatch items from different stores to use as weapons including golf clubs, lawnmowers, frying pans and more
• Consume food and drink to revive health

It looks like a Playstation 2 game, visually. The Wii IS capable of better visuals than this, why do developers (even good ones like Capcom) seem to insist on not even trying?
Oh, because they know it'll sell anyway.

Those graphics are horrible. The Wii should really stick with its family games and stop roaming outside the Game Cube PS2 graphics arena.

Neo said:

Seriously, is there any need to make the game look that badly, the hardware isn't /that/ awful, it doesn't even look upto a 3rd Gen PS2 game.

Is it really hard to develop for?, or are the developers just plain lazy?

Does anyone else feel the aiming at casual gamers has caused this increase in lazy ports of shovelware and/or cash in franchises?, or just contributed?

Were they looking for a reason to just resort to lazy porting and cashing in?, it's surely miles easier.

Laziness pays off now, but eventually people will get sick of the Wii's terrible games flood, the casual gamers don't know better, Yet!, they will.

This is priceless.

I'm not talking about the screens though (which btw, look "meh" not "horrible"). It was just this weekend that Neo and Shin were complaining about the lack of "core" games on Wii, and what happens as soon as they're given one of the best original IP games of the HD consoles? Bitching, more bitching, and another, tired "lazy port" claim.

This thing is using the RE4 Engine, which has proven itself as a great engine this gen (RE4:Wii looks better than some retail 360 games). There appears to be a slightly different style in gameplay, with the hopes that fans of the first one will pick this up for something a little different. And this version improves (fixes?) the biggest complaint of the 360 version, it's awful SNES-era save system. Neo, a lazy port would include none of the above and you know it.

Capcom is clearly taking chances with Wii where others are not. This game, Okami, Zack and Wiki all quality "core" games that should appeal/appease the trolls above, but it sounds like they're more interested in playing "snarky forum poster" than a real game. If this is the reaction that you give people that are actively trying to bring you the games you asked for, maybe we're all better off with nothing but WiiSports Resort.

Forget the haters. All I needed to get excited about this game "Improved save functionality."

stop calling people "trolls", it's fucking retarded.

you hound these comments just as much as anyone else with the same tired rhetoric...so if you're going to attack people, don't be hypocritical about it.

these screens look like an early ps2 game. if you don't see that then you really are delusional.

Don't worry, he's a game developer, or a tester or something, weighty opinions ON THE INTERNETS!!!1 [See, I'm so uptight and stressed he's disagreed I pressed a 1 in sheer rage, because I'm rushing with anger, and my eyebrows are suitably furrowed]

Bringing AAA franchises to the Wii is fine, giving it a rush job panning with a casual "Oh it's worked in that game, lets just redo that plus one change" irks of laziness and capitalising on a name.

A tired rhetoric would have no need to be if they [that been developers] would address issues people have with Wii development, I want the Wii to be successful, Wii Tennis is hilarious, and drunk Wii boxing thrice as such.

But finding excuses for laziness and when someone like me disagrees, just trying to take a high road that doesn't exist, it's a website, not anywhere of particular importance.

I love the Wii and the difference it can bring to interacting, I am yet to really see it in full swing.

As far as I can tell, a troll just blindly posts about nothing in particular, in as many places as possible, intent on causing reaction, I do no such thing, however the fact that three times now you address me directly seems to me you're stalking me.

Is it a personal disdain for me for disagreeing with you?, or do you latch onto everyone who has a differing informed opinion?

Shin Gallon said:

Well, if they'd actually put some effort into the port rather than giving it a PS2 quality reduction in visuals and slapping some crappy motion controls onto it, then it WOULD be a good thing. However, as that is exactly what they've done here, it's less "good game coming to Wii" and more "missed opportunity to make Wii version worth a damn".
So, honestly, shut up.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
