E3 '08: Away: Shuffle Dungeon
Majesco's recently-announced Away: Shuffle Dungeong is a Zelda-inspired action RPG for the DS that spreads its action across both screens at once and sports at least 30 hours of puzzle-solving action. There's also a "cross-dresser" who hits on a weapon smith, I've been told. So there's that.
The twist on Away: Shuffle Dungeon is the timer on each screen that counts down for the few seconds you have until that screen's layout gets "shuffled," damaging your character should he have the poor sense not to book it to the other screen in time.
The shuffling of the map isn't at all random, however: you may have to pull a lever on one screen, for instance, to open a door on another. If the lever's map gets shuffled before you can reach it, it will return in a few shuffles. This mechanic opens up all kinds of neat puzzle-action ideas, and I'm excited to be experience more of them - this game stands a good head or so taller than many of the derivative RPGish games that have been pushed onto the DS.
Since your village has been kidnapped by a mysterious force, and rescuing its citizens is the goal of the game, you'll find your world populated and enriched as you progress: that hit-upon weapon smith, for instance, won't appear to sell you his goods until you've rescued him. I definitely plan on rescuing Away from a nearby retail store when it's released later this fall.
