E3 '08: Hands On With Castlevania: Judgment

While I was in Konami's room at E3 I went ahead and checked out Castlevania: Judgment since I knew it was a game many would be curious. After playing the game for a few minutes I was left with one really big question: Why? I mean, I'm glad someone is attempting to bring a true fighting game to the Wii. but is this really the wisest choice? It almost seems they feel it will sell units based solely on the fact that it is Castlevania characters. Castlevania is a great franchise, but I think that fans are going to be a bit disappointed by this offering.
As a concept I do like the thought of a true fighting game on the Wii that utilizes the Wii remote controls. One thing I can say in favor of Castlevania: Judgment is that it made good use of the controls. Alucard seemed to match my motions pretty closely and the movement seemed smooth. But, in the end I doubt that decent controls will be enough to really sell this game. The version I played had pretty unimpressive graphics that looked blocky and fuzzy, something I'm finding a constant issue with Wii games. Perhaps this was just the build I played, the TV it was on or my glasses were needing a cleaning, but I was not wowed by what I saw.
Overall I was left with the feeling that this was just your basic mediocre fighting game with Castlevania characters tacked on and nothing really special. I'm sure there will be some hardcores out there who will truly appreciate this title, but ultimately I think this will be greeted with a collective "Meh" from the Castlevania community at large. If you are looking for a real Castlevania experience, save your dollars for Castlvania: Order of Ecclesia on the DS.

They should have called it "Castlevania: Concerto of Failure".
Ba dum-bum-CHEE!
That's a good one.
Alucard looks like Sephiroth-lite in this one although I strongly approve of the pumpkins in Maria's attack.
comments overheard in the Konami Boardroom...........
exec #1: "We need to capitalize on the success of the Wii and those motion controls! Lets develop the next great Castlevania game for the Wii!"
exec #2: "ohhh yes. should it be 3-d? 2-d side scroller?, what role play elements will it have in it???"
exec #1: "Oh no, we need to develop it fast and cheap, I know a fighting game! It will make millions!!
"fast and cheap" descripes 98% of the Wii's library, really. I can't say I blame Konami, but this is a symptom of how "casual gaming" is going to ruin the market.
They did show the alpha version only...
