E3 '08: Madworld
We followed the Segalicious outrageousness of Bayonetta with a second Platinum Games title, the black and white Running Man-esque Madworld.
Much as No More Heroes dropped an ultraviolent, stylized bomb on the family-friendly Wii, so does Madworld add more adults-only gore to the house that Nintendo built.
The premise seemed promising enough: Jack is starring in a game show named "Deathwatch," and since that title is very literal, he'll be fighting other contestants to the death while two snarky announcers sass out commentary on the brutal, over-the-top murderfest.
Easy to love, right? We saw so little of the game that there's really no telling, but the violence seemed lush and enthusiastic - the black and white world was peppered with lethal objects, making practically the entire environment a weapon. We saw other contestants impaled on a variety of huge giant spikes, and the default weapon is a chainsaw. Sounds like my dear old Grandpappy Tiny's house, the crazy coot!
Those of you familiar with No More Heroes' Wiimote and nunchuck fighting controls should feel at home here, and the only color on screen is red blood and some mustard yellow HUD elements. Visually the game makes a strong impact, and the stylized presentation is a smooth way of distracting the eye from the Wii's low-res jaggies. (I would make the argument that certain genres tend to demand more in the way of gorgeous graphics, and that battlers don't necessarily number among those games. Yet. But that's another story entirely...)
The voiceover work from the announcers came just short of annoying in my short time listening, and I heard the same commentary several times in just a few minutes, making me nervous about repetitiveness. Also, I believe I heard the vocal talent of Whose Line Is It Anyway? comic Greg Proops as one of the announcers, which was a minus in my book but could be a plus depending on your preference.
In any event, look forward to the ability to add more graphic and fun dismemberment to your Wii in March 2009.

Is the other commentator Bender B. Rodriguez?
