E3 '08: Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers

Does it help illustrate the B-movie appeal of Japanese girlfighting zombie franchise Onechanbara that the Playboy writer next to me kept insisting to the producers that they remove the lingerie from the game? This Grindhouse-worthy Japanese 360 game is finally coming to the states on the Wii, thanks to D3Publisher, and should make a killing by bringing sword combat, zombies, and a pair of nearly-nekkid sisters to North American Wiis.

The over-the-top violence and exposed flesh pretty much sum up the game's ambitions, which are to provide as much glorious low-budget skin'n'gore as possible. Or, as the long-haired cutie pictured in the video described it to me, "Kill Bill the zombie movie."

Same-screen co-op with the sisters was just about the only traditional feature I heard about, but the focus rests clearly on the feather-boa-wearing cowgirl onscreen, who became soaked in virtual blood that dripped off of her body and swords in a most appealing fashion. If you're into that sort of thing, of course.

What else is there to say? Onechanbara looks like a campy, bloody battler that doesn't aspire to be much more than a campy, bloody battler. Sure, I'd love to play as the sisters' hot dude cousin, but at the end of the day I'm just glad that nearly naked ladies can enjoy dual-wielding samurai swords and decapitating the undead.

Releasing sometime during the first quarter of 2009.
