Nintendo's Wii: Still Popular

wii_sales.jpg

I know, right? It's hard to believe, but Nintendo's Wii is the number one home videogame console in the U.S. according to teh sales tracking info from the NPD Group. Nintendo sold another 666,000 (666? Could darker forces be responsible for the Wii's success? Someone check Reggie's scalp!) consoles in the month of June, and in the 20 months since its launch, nearly 10.9 million Wiis have found their way into homes. Crazy!

"Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another."

I don't mind the new ways to interact with the games, but I wouldn't mind seeing some more innovation with the actual games themselves. But that's just me. Anyhow, the press release finishes off by reminding that the DS is still the top selling game system with 783,000 sold in June and 20.8 million since launch. And six of the ten top selling games for June were made for Nintendo consoles, including Guitar Hero: On Tour, Wii Fit, Wii Play (Seriously? Who's still buying that?) Mario Kart Wii and LEGO Indiana Jones for both the Wii and DS. Jinkies!

I assume people buying Wii Play are buying it with their new Wiis. I bought the game too and it's nice to have.. especially since I didn't get Wii Sports with my system.

Not to mention you get a free remote with the game, which sell almost as fast as the systems in some places.

The reason for that is though because I got a used Wii. The systems were so hard to get I didn't dare return the system though. Hopefully I'll find Wii Sports used somewhere.

Honestly? I kind of wish that the console WASN'T selling so well. It seems they are riding so amazingly high on system sales alone they don't feel the need to bother making good games for it anymore.

It's been a long time since any preview for a Wii game has wowed me (or even left me with a desire for it at all), and even longer since I've seen a game out that I wanted to purchase. This is the inherent problem with making a system that only seems to have good games coming from first-party developers- when the first party games have all already come out there is a dry spell of epic proportions.

My Wii sits there, a glorified paperweight, begging to be used. I just want them to realize that- while the "casual gamer" is a good market- its probably not a good idea to snub the more avid and traditional gaming community either.

There are things a Wii can accomplish that a PS3 and 360 cannot- simply due to their innovative controller. The potential for it to be used for great games that appeal to more traditional gamers is boundless, but they seem to be completely ignoring it.

I hope this changes soon, or else I may just give the precious Wii away.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
