PS3 Firmware 2.42 Arrives, But What Does It Do?

ps3242.jpg

New firmware for the PS3 popped up last night while I was playing Soul Calibur IV. I tried downloading it then and there but kept getting an error message since (I'm assuming) many folks were trying to do the same thing at the same time. I got up this morning and it downloaded in a few seconds and I was back in action. The PlayStation Blog had a rather short and to the point entry about the update although it didn't give much in the way of details.

This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.

And there you have it. There is some speculation around the interwebs that this update was put out to accommodate Life with PlayStation which has been rumored to be launching this week. I guess we'll see come Thursday, but until then it's back to Sooooooooul Calibuuuuuur... IV!

Can anyone answer this question for me?

I prefer to purchase games for the PS3 over the 360 (I like the system and the controller better).

But why is it games typically for the PS3 only support up to 720p and the same game on the 360 will support 1080p?!?! My latest dilemma lies with Soul Calibur 4 and Devil May Cry 4!

Because I invested money in a high-def screen, I feel that I am forced to go with the 360 versions so that I am getting full HD, and that really blows! And Sony should realize that they are probably losing sales because of this!!

Erik - One thing to consider is that the vast majority of games for both PS3 and Xbox 360 actually run in 720p (or thereabouts), and are then upscaled to 1080p by the system. If your TV's native resolution is 1080p, whenever you watch/play something that takes up the whole screen, it's being upscaled to 1080p by the TV (or game system/upconverting DVD player), unless the content itself is already in 1080p such as Blu-Ray/HD-DVD movies, and a few games. So, long story short, the fact that most PS3 game boxes don't have the little box that says 1080p on them doesn't necessarily mean that the game's resolution is going to be any different from the Xbox 360 version upscaled. And if your TV does a good job of upscaling, it wouldn't make much of a difference either way.

Fruit Brute, the 2.42 update apparently makes the trophies load considerably faster when viewing a user's gamercard.

You heard it here first. :)
