Rumorama: Trophies Mandatory In 2009?

I don't know about anyone else, but when I downloaded the 2.40 firmware update, I was more or less sitting there and saying "Now what"? I don't have many online buddies on my PS3 as of yet, let alone any games with internet connectivity so the in game XMB have marginal use for me. But trophies, what about the trophies?
An unnamed developer dropped a little news to Joystiq. Trophies will be "mandated" by sony in 2009. Is it true? Probably, and realistically it's not that big of a deal to require developers to include them. It's just a triggered event, right?
It goes without saying that the inclusion of trophies is only useful if they are widely supported. The number of trophies a players has is significantly more subjective if only a small selection of games support them. Lets face it, rubbing your football trophy in a hockey player's face doesn't accomplish much.
Rumor: Sony 'mandating' some unique Trophies in 2009 [Joystiq]

So, why in the first place did Sony not aggressively feature trophies when the PS3 first launched and require that all games support it, like MS did with the Xbox360 from the get go?
@ IntrpidHomoludens
Prolly because Sony didn't think that cross game achievements would catch on like they would.
For third parties, it can take awhile to get something like this up and running inside of a game that's already in production. Depending on the libraries that Sony has up and running for this, setting off "Trophy Get!" could be as easy as simple script or could be more complicated due to the differences/changes in firmware and it's compatibility with engine code. This really depends on the "under the hood" changes Sony has been making to the fireware in recent updates. It makes sense that they would hold off on making Trophies a requirement for awhile until the libraries were solid.
But this rumor is kind of revealing though. If true this means that Sony really rushed Trophy content out the door, since changing the requirements for lot check are typically planned well ahead of time, or at least they should be anyways.

Yeah, I want to take advantage of all this online schtuff, too. I'll be your friend and David's friend...let's start a chain.
