Universal Gets Back Into Gaming, Acts Reasonable

Universal is getting back into the videogame business (after Vivendi Games bought Universal Interactive back in 2000) with the production of Wanted, based on the recent film. Universal is also developing other games based on its film and TV properties, but no word on what those might be yet.
Interestingly, Universal is hoping to devote more time to production by skipping the need to negotiate with outside publishers, although they apparently will still license out some properties. But the good ones, they're going to handle themselves. And even more amazingly, they seem to want to do Wanted up right. The game will be released on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it's going to be a big budget production. The game will pick up where the flick ended, but there's no word on whether James McAvoy will be voicing the digital Wesley. In other good news, Pete Wanat, who oversaw The Chronicles of Riddick for Vivendi is the executive producer.
But get this: While the game is targeted for a release laster this year or in early 2009, probably with the film's DVD release, Digital Platforms Group VP Bill Kispert insists that Universal won't be releasing Wanted until it's ready. DVD release be damned! Crazy! Who releases a videogame when its' ready? Especially a licensed one? That's insane! Who do these people think they are?
