E3 '08: Final Fantasy XIII - US 360 Release On It's Way!

Ok ok ok, I know this is going to make a lot of people angry, but can't say I didn't see it coming. The US is getting an Xbox 360 release of Final Fantasy XIII. At this moment I'm taking a moment for all the angry cries to subside... and done. Up until the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, this was answer to the fundamental question: Why should I buy a PS3? Ok, so I know games like White Knight, Wipeout HD and Little Big Planet are on their way, but this is still a big blow for people that bought the system hoping for this once-exclusive title.

Shortly after the announcement of the additional release, Square-Enix released this video trailer. There are lots of Japanese captions that I can't read, so I'm going to just spit out a couple of the thoughts that came to my mind while viewing.

  1. Oh no! They brought the white seed ship back!
  2. Hey, I remember that chick from Skies of Arcadia!
  3. Did carbuncle just come out of a CD?

On the plus side, the combat actually looks rather actiony, rather than people taking turns smacking each other. Also, those summons are really damn hot. Viva la cross-platform!

I own a PS3 and plan on getting this game for the PS3 but I think it is awesome that it will be on the 360 as well. the more people that can enjoy great games the better. I just hope this doesn't delay the release date any further.

Does anyone else think that the Carbuncle in this game is disgusting?

As an owner of both platforms, I have to say that I was initially shocked, angry because I'd bought a PS3 specifically for this game, and then got over it and am now happy for those who own a 360.

And I'll probably buy it for the PS3, because aside from the PS2 games (I got a 60gb version), the only thing I play on it is Folklore.

But still, good show Microsoft. XD

The CG character facial expressions seem a little stiff, but I hope that's only 'cause they're rendered in realtime(???).

fanboys who don't want third party games are just spoiled brats who don't want to share their toys.
there are enough good 1st party exclusives on all consoles that people can be happy with whichever console they bought.
/and then i came back to reality where fanboys are the bane of the internet.

This has officially made my day! I was all pissed about Bioshock getting released on PS3 but this makes up for it.

Spazgadget said:

Great news for 360 owners. I'll still be buying it for the PS3, but great news for MS.

Wonder if Sony has anything up their sleeves for tomorrow?

SZK said:

Actually FF13 was one of the two reasons why I bought a PS3 (with MGS4 being the other). I think it's a great thing to have this come out on both consoles, as it means that more people will get the opportunity to experience/play it.

If Squenix had said that FF13 would be released only on the 360...now THAT would have pissed me off.

GeorgeR said:

The only problem DJFluke is that aside from Little Big Planet and White Knight (sorry I don't count Wipeout) there's no real huge PS3 exclusives. Meanwhile Microsoft keeps pumping them out.

This is a huge huge hit for Sony, if Microsoft manages to get exclusive downloadable content with FFXIII things could be even worse.

Nathan said:

Yeah, I admit the only reason I got a PS3 was the fact of FFXIII and the future SE MMORPG.

Wolverinefactor said:

Really? MS keeps pumping out exclusives? Like what?

Oh and Sony has Resistance 2.

Gears 2, Fable 2, both will hit PC thus making them non-exclusive.

Avshalon said:

So, with the recent price drop, I've been thinking of getting a 360. Not that I haven't thought of it before! But, with Resident Evil 5 and now THIS! Oh yeah, gotta get it.

PS: Dead Eyes!

OrangeXenon said:

YAY!!! I just KNEW this would happen. I NEED Final Fantasy in order to live, so this is great news that I don't have to shell out $600 for one game. Sony just has nothing going for them now. It's really funny to see that all of these PS3 exclusives have turned tale and run to other platforms, kind of like what happened with the Gamecube.

MuddBstrd said:

Like most PS3 owners, I was shocked and a bit pissed off at this, mostly because there have been rumors about this for over a year now and Squeenix has vehemently denied them. But, I'm happy for my friends who have a 360 and now get to play this awesome game. Will probably still get it for the PS3 if only because it will probably be just one disc.

One thing to note, however, is that only FFXIII is confirmed to go cross-platform. The ensuing Square-Enix press conference saw Wada make mention that Versus XIII was still a PS3 exclusive.

By the way, does anyone else find it hilarious that the trailer still says 'For Playstation 3 Only' at the end?

d.k.x said:

@ Muddbstrd: That's because FFXIII is still a PS3 exclusive in Japan. Xbox 360 sells great here, PS3 not as much. PS3 sells great there, xbox 360 not so much

Thank God we're finally supporting a Console that is American made. We need to stop supporting all Japanese consoles and realize it only helps us to support our own.

@MuddBstrd:

I wondered that, too. And then I saw the "only In Japan" bit. So you're not the only one. :p

Augusto said:

Just a thought... i think that Square is slowly getting away from Sony, it's like taking out their support for the PlayStation brand.

Nexus said:

I'm tempted to make a comment about how after Operation Darkness, Spectral Force 3 and Culdcept Saga we Europeans probably shouldn't hold out hope.
But surely not even Squenix is that stupid.
*goes back to read about their mainstream games only news*
Oooooh, right...

Nexus said:

BTW I know those games aren't by them.
Just making a point about good interesting 360 games we're missing out on for no conceivable reason.

The gods of Square Enix have answered my prayers!

Am I the only one that wishes the turn based combat would come back? FFX has the best battle system out of any game in the series, whereas XII has the absolute worst. Honestly, I'm finding it hard to work up much, if any enthusiasm for this game. XII was so bad it honestly killed my interest in not only Final Fantasy, but JRPGs in general.
So, nifty that it's coming out on both systems, but it never was a system seller for me. I might rent it, maybe, but so far I'm not happy with how the battle system looks.

Phoenix0879 said:

I'm kinda disappointed, because this was one of the reasons I bought a PS3 and not a 360 - not the only one, but it was in the decision making process (the biggy was the frankly frightening number of people to suffer the dreaded Red Ring Of Death. Decision made heh). Still, it'll be shiny no matter the system. And we still get versus XIII as a PS3 exclusive.

And you can't exactly blame Square Enix for wanting to expand their audience....

Ann said:

Kinda stupid to make it inside Japan still PS3 ONLY *headdesk* Anyways, FF lost its magic to me and the trailer, while it does look good, seems without soul and magic like the latest FF-games, maybe even like all those new Square(Enix)-games.

Stevie said:

I've been holding out on deciding between Xbox or PS3 until I got this information. I had a feeling SE would do this, just on principle of sales in NA and Europe. At least I finally know which HD system to get!

Ashley-Yin said:

Not supprised nor disappointed SE said ages ago they wanted to expand their reach and it proves conclusivly japanese are better at keeping things secret. i have to say there was nothing that made me say im buyin a 360 and its not like MS said sorry for being homophobic. cant wait for verses and dissidia.

aj said:

Honestly, this news and the price drop is what has convinced me to go and buy a 360.

(I just hope XIII isn't as God-awful as XII was.)

I definitely agree on X, but XII is also among my favorite battle systems in the series. RPGs are about building and planning, and with X, planning was possible because the turn order was displayed. With XII, it took a completely different form with gambits for different occasions.

I prefer turn-based, and I've always hated ATB. The enemy has a move planned and can execute it the moment its turn comes up. It also gets to keep attacking while you're moving the cursor around the menu. It's just like RTSs where the AI gets to play like it has fifteen hands. Don't punish the player for not being a computer.

Turn-based gameplay and programmable AI are two different solutions for that problem, represented by X and XII respectively.

"John said:

There is so much wrong with that, even ignoring the pointless jingoism.

First of all, the last American console before the XBox was the Atari Jaguar, which was not only designed and marketed, but even manufactured in America, but the system was just unlovable. I know; I have one. It was bizarrely designed with the utmost inefficiency. It could do some cool things once it had the data capacity of the CD-ROM addon, but at that point, you were waist-deep in an expensive platform that no one cared enough about to make a decent game for it.

Second, the 360's success doesn't help "us" at all. Everything is manufactured in China, so it's not like this is giving more Americans those cushy, minimum-wage assembly line jobs we wish so desperately the immigrants weren't enjoying in our stead. Individual units make a tiny profit over parts, which is almost certainly still a loss after manufacturing, shipping, and distributing. Microsoft is losing billions with the endeavor as a whole, which is coming out of Windows and Office profits, even after income from licensing and Live. On top of that, the foreigners are much more benevolent than our homegrown software monopoly, especially Nintendo, which actually makes a business of video games rather than subsidizing a tar baby platform as trojan marketing for proprietary services, data formats, and DRM. In short, money spent on a 360 is still leaving the country, and it's not a sustainable business model for the future of video gaming, nor is supporting Microsoft in the best interests of anyone who values freedom in technology. Yeah, we're getting ridiculously powerful hardware on the cheap, but the catch is more restricted access to what we pay for and the continuing hegemony of malevolent conglomerates.

Not that I'm not planning on buying a 360 soon, but your reasoning struck me as just slightly dead wrong.

"Ann said:

The 360 is not popular internationally, and especially not in Japan, which makes the Star Ocean and Infinite Undiscovery exclusives very suspicious.

Cool! Bitching, cost, and fanboyism aside, I wish all games were multiplatform so everyone could enjoy them on whichever system they prefer!

With that said I could see how sinking $600 bucks in a system for FFXIII dreams could lead to some sore feelings (and wallets).

The game looks great, but I hope this game is more character driven than XII! I prefer the strong characters of X to the almost non-entities of FFXII.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
