DICE Says Battlefield Heroes "Already Out"

battlefieldheroes.jpg

If there is one thing I must say about Battlefield Heroes, is that they have done a very good job at not pandering for hype. Announced earlier this year, Battlefield Heroes is a online enabled FPS with a light-hearted art style. The game is intended to be a micro-transaction enabled system where players can invest only as much into the title as they are willing to spend. The question of course is, when is it going to be released?

In a recent interview with executive producer Ben Cousins, he explained that the title is effectively already released.

It's really our plan, within the closed beta, to get a very high number of peak concurrent users and we expect in the later phases of the closed beta to be about as big as Bad Company is today in terms of online numbers.

We're going to have a very large closed beta almost to the point where every hardcore gamer in the world will probably be able to get a key if they want to - it would just be within a closed beta so that we can control the size of it to a degree.

Seems reasonable enough, although it is a risky move. Trickling in users pulls media away, if the hardcore audience is already playing not many game journalists will prioritize the title when it is completely opened. I would hate to see this game sputter out because it wasn't ushered in with a grand flourish and fanfare. In the mean time, keep trolling those beta keys!
