Explaining The Singstar PS3/PS2 Imported Song Saga
You may have read around the tubes yesterday about an announcement at Leipzig yesterday concerning Singstar karaoke for the PS3. Original reports stated that you would be able to rip the songs from your PS2 Singstar discs onto the PS3 a la Rock Band 2. The folks over at MTV's Multiplayer blog did a little digging and discovered that this was not entirely accurate.
The real story it seems is that the game will utilize a disc swapping method. Hitting the Select button will eject your Singstar disc and replace it with one of the older PS2 discs and then all those songs will drop into the PS3 version. But, those songs will only remain in the game as long as the PS2 disc is in the drive. Backwards compatibility issues will be resolved with the disc swapping patch that's to come out soon. Sure it's not as seamless an integration as Rock Band 2's but it least it will give those of us who love to Singstar on the PS3 a way to expand our playlist with discs we already have.
