Mario Super Sluggers Swings For The Fences
Once again, if you happen to live in or near the New York City area, the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller center was the place to get the newest Nintendo game a couple days before it hits stores in the rest of the country. And this Sunday, August 24, Nintendo had itself a little launch event for the debut of Mario Super Sluggers for the Wii. And even though this was a Mario game, it wasn't as big a launch as some of their other parties. Although if you bought a copy of the game, you could get in the massively long line that stretched all along the upper floor to meet Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario. (Which I never thought was that big a deal because Mario doesn't really talk that much.) Oh, and they were also giving out peanuts and Cracker Jacks as well as Mario baseball cards (that even came with gum!).
I'm not a big baseball fan, so I didn't actually buy the game, but I did give it a shot, once the two boys ahead of me finally decided that it wasn't exactly polite to try and play a whole five inning game while there was a line forming behind them. Like all the Mario sports games, the controls are extra-easy, using only the Wiimote. Like Wii Sports baseball, you flick the Wiimote overhand to pitch, then swing it to hit. And when you hit, you waggle it back and forth to sprint to the base. So it all amounts to a whole lot of waggling around looking like a fool. And naturally, it wasn't that difficult, and I very quickly started getting base hits. So if you're looking for a serious sports sim, Super Mario Sluggers is clearly not the game for you. But hey, the kids seemed to get really into it! (I predict another upswing in stories of Wiimotes flying into TV screens...)
