PS3 BioShock: New Rooms, More Hard.

bioshocksurvivor.jpg

I have a love hate relationship with Bioshock. I love the art, the atmosphere, and stylistically the entire game is profound. It's pretty darn fun too, a weird blend of stealth, puzzle solving (sorta), and of course smashing crazy flapper women in the face with a monkey wrench. I don't, however, like playing the game on hard. I hate you Fontane. Now the game has been out for quite some time now, and now it's seeing a release on the PS3. So, what's new?

Well, they are adding a couple of things actually. It has already been said that there will be no real improvement in graphics, not much to be done there, the title is already the cats pajamas. What Is making it into the new version are newly downloadable "challenge rooms", which I guess are just rooms that offer a challenge. That's a bit of a stretch though. Additionally, they are offering a new "survivor" mode.

No, this new mode will not involve a tribal council or really bad reality TV drama. Survivor Mode is essentially Hard +1. The AI is the same, although much of the game's resources will be reduced or made less useful. The price of plasmids increases, lower health boosts and less ammo can be found. IE: I will never play this mode.

Does it make the game worth another purchase? I don't know, but I certainly will be renting it. Nothing like a strong, big daddy to really brighten my day.

Sounds more like Rape Rooms, amirite?

Honestly BioShock on Hard was nuts on the PC. I can't even begin to imagine how many TVs are going to be smashed by flying controllers as people become frustrated by thumb-stick-FPSing on this new mode.

Just play the 360 game with the Vita-chambers turned off. Boy-howdy, that makes things hard enough. Suddenly, the Big Daddies are really scary.

I actually just finished the game on hard today... Pretty easy..

I still just need to know if they're adding mouse/keyboard to the PS3 version. After fumbling my way through the 360 version on a controller I'd love to play the game properly, but lack the gaming PC to run it, so this would sell me a PS3 copy.

Aww, I'm jealous. The biggest thing that held me back from complete and utter admiration of Bioshock was that I found it much too easy even on Hard mode because the game throws way too many resources (health, ammo, etc.) at you. Then again, the design is such that I'm not so sure that the challenge resulting from providing less resources would actually be fun and skill-based. (Sure, I CAN carry five gas tanks across a level to save ammo, but it's not quality gameplay.)
