Review: SBCG4AP Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner

Regular readers of this site probably know I'm a huge fan of Homestar Runner and Strong Bad, and was eagerly anticipating the release of Telltale Games' first installment in the five-episode series Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People (But you can play, too!), entitled Homestar Ruiner.
So when it was released on Monday, I dropped the 1000 points and downloaded the game. But how did it hold up? Was it everything I thought it could be? Well, I'm not going to tell you here! Make the jump to find out!
The best thing about SBCG4AP is that the humor translates perfectly. Right from the title screen, I was already chuckling. Now, of course, if you don't enjoy the web cartoons this game is based on, then it's probably not for you. But if you are a fan of Homestar Runner, then SBCG4AP is the greatest fan service ever. Aside from the basic game, which is essentially an interactive Strong Bad cartoon, you can also play the Videlectrix classic Snake Boxer 5, create some Teen Girl Squad comics, and send and receive your own Strong Bad E-mails!
The basic plot has you directing Strong Bad as he plots to keep his rival, Homestar Runner, from winning the Race To The End Of The Race. Naturally, that becomes incredibly complicated, and entails all kinds of item collecting and usage to create typically hilarious results. As with any adventure game, it's all pointing and clicking with the Wiimote to wander around Strong Bad's world interacting with the people, places and things within. Controls work as expected, with only a few bits where I accidentally went down or up stairs instead of walking past them. No biggie. And it all looks exactly like the web cartoons, aside from the fact that everything's lovingly rendered in cell-shaded 3D graphics.
Chatting with the denizens of this wacky world creates some hilarious dialogue moments, especially when you take the option to be naughty instead of nice. And thankfully, for a humorous adventure game, the solutions to the puzzles were actually relatively logical. (Sometimes they can get pretty out there.) I never really felt like I got stuck too long on any one bit. Actually, it felt like it was a little too easy, if you want to know the truth. My only complaint is that it's over too soon. At ten bucks, it felt a wee bit short. But since all five chapters will run you $50 (you only get a discount buying the whole shebang on PC), it's like buying a regular game anyway. A bit pricey for a Wii game, but still... Playing through the first chapter took me just over 3 hours, so that should equal 15-20 hours total for all five chapters, which is actually pretty reasonable. And I still haven't found all the secret items yet, or gotten all the trophies, and I still can't get all four Teen Girl Squad members to die before the end of the comic... Hm... I'll have to try harder!
Here's looking forward to Episode 2!

Sever your leg please, its the greatest day.
Yeah, its pretty easy, but its worth the 10 bucks, and yeah, I can't wait for the second one to come out as well, though I can already tell my other game saves will have to go onto an SD card since these take up quite a bit of space.
