Star Trek Online Takes Place In The Next, Next Generation

startrekonline.jpeg

Prior to tomorrow's big media event, Cryptic Studios Chief Creative Officer Jack Emmert is dishing some details about the company's upcoming Star Trek Online. First, for those of you hoping to explore planets with Sulu or shoot Troi in the face with a phaser, some bad news, as the game will take place a few generations after the last Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, with most of the characters from the show retired or passed away. At least until the game stops selling and they have to put out a Wesley Crusher's Revenge expansion pack.

As for the gameplay itself, you start the game as captain of a small Starfleet or Klingon vessel and work your way up to larger ships with bigger crews. Adventures will take place on a number of planets as well as on ships themselves, and will include large scale space battles, such as Deep Space 9's Dominion War.

Although the game will definitely be on PC, the company isn't ruling out console versions. Cryptic is currently working on the superhero MMO Champions Online, which is slated for release on PC and Xbox 360.

Tomorrow's presentation, which will stream live at StarTrekOnline.com, will be taking advantage of the game's technology as it exists today, so at that point you can judge for yourself how far along the game appears.
