Video Game Music Mixing It Up With The Mainstream

Move over John Williams and Danny Elfman, video game composers are gaining the respect once monopolized by their film and television counterparts. Dan Stattmann over at The Celebrity Café has written a great article about the often glossed video game music industry and how it isn't just about midi tracks anymore. Apparently the not so vaguely titled Video Games Live: Volume One is being seen as an actual hit. Who'd have thunk?
What I found most interesting were the list of composers that have crossed over from video games to movies and TV. I bet ya'll didn't know Alias and Ratatouille composer Michael Giacchino was discovered thanks to his work on Medal of Honor. Other crossover talents include Howard Shore, John Debney and Harry Gregson-Williams. I can't help but hope that video game writers will follow suit, or maybe we'll score some comic book talents like Lost has done in the past.
Check the link below for the full story. No mention of famed Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu though, shame on you!

No matter what the US guys do, Elfman and company will always be hated by the British guys, and in turn the British guys will be hated by the European composers.
And I imagine they have the same attitude towards game composers, it's a multi-tiered elitism, and it's a complete crock of shit.
Music is music from whatever medium, if you make it for a 200 piece orchestra or a boss battle in Final Fantasy it's still music.
Also the album has a lot of filler, Kindom Hearts, Warcraft, Advent Rising and the Halo Suite, but Castlevania, Civ IV, Tron and God of War make up for them, delivering the far superior pieces of music.
I agree with Neo. Music will remain music in any form.
YES! I love stories like this, being a chiptune/electronic artist.
Even the mainstream pop/rap music is totally using chip sounding synths.
It's great!
