Video: Left 4 Dead GC '08 Trailer

I am totally psyched for Valve's Left 4 Dead. The idea of playing co-op online with a few friends against hordes of zombies just sounds so fantastically awesome it's hard to put into words. I guess you could say it's like Resident Evil Online done right, and judging from this trailer, on speed. And steroids. Yeah, I'm not so sure I like that 'roided out Resident Evil reject running around. I kind of just wanted to shoot zombies. Not zombie Hulks. Still, while this trailer doesn't give you much of an idea of what actually playing the game will be like, it sure doesn't skimp on the frenetic action! Man, that's a lot of zombies!

Boo! I actually *liked* nay loved the Resident Evil Online series. :-P Sure, it had it's flaws, but it was traditional RE with better (i.e. non tank like) controls and still has that "classic" look and feel of RE/RE2. Left 4 Dead does look pretty sweet though, but I can has PS3 port? :'(

I think this actually does showcase the gameplay it just does it so cinematically it's hard to tell what's going on (which is somewhat common for valve trailers). Basically it will be like playing half life 2 or counter strike only with lots of screen overlays and very fast zombies.

This particular hulk zombie is just a boss unit, though I must say I'm interested in exactly how he's programmed. Does he spawn the rock in his hands that he throws or does he actually pick it up from the ground gravity-gun-style with pre-fab bits of the ground set to be picked up by hulk-like zombies dynamically?

Maybe I've been mapping in the source engine too much, eh?

Well you'd better beleive I'll be the one of the first to try and put out a custom L4D map days after it's released :D I'm excited!

OK i watched the trailer in HD. Just to answer my own question: The zombie spawns the rock in his hands then when he throws it it is extruded from a launch command probably embedded in his NPC scripting, similar to how you can tell an Episode 2 hunter to launch a combine ball or a combine to throw a grenade. Then the chunk that's in his hands goes invisible, but it's always there to be re-spawned if he's ready to throw another rock. This means whenever he picks up a chunk of concrete, however, the ground stays the way it is. Which makes it easier from a mapping standpoint but less dynamic. Considering what I've seen Dog do using his gravity gun I figured they might consider using actual physics beyond just spawning pre-fab rock models. Oh well.
