Video: Watch The Xbox 360 Full Game Install Process
Part of the new Xbox 360 update, due later this fall, will be the option to install any Xbox 360 disc based game to the hard drive, presumably to slash load times, reduce stress on the DVD drive, and maybe even cut down on the jet engine noise it emits every time it starts spinning, at least on slightly older systems like mine (but that's just a guess). Some enterprising Xbox owner seems to have gotten an early version of the dashboard update and demonstrates the installation process in the video above. Seems pretty straight forward, and as you can see, the disc will still be required.
Sadly, the video fades to black after the installation begins, leaving us with no idea how long the process will take. He does show us that the GTA 4 takes up 6.8 GB of space on the hard drive when he's done. Looks like those of us with 20 GB hard drives will only be able to fit one, maybe two games on a time, but you folks who invested in Elites might finally have a use for all that space.

This is brilliant and something I have wanted for years, but I am surprised that they have done this. Large companies are always VERY protective on how people consume their media. With this I assume that some publishers might object because disks might get passed around.
If the load times are drastically reduced, then I will consider replacing my 20gb with a 120gb. Less stress on the DVD drive sounds good too, since mine has been acting a bit dodgy lately.
Decompiled, you still need the original disk.
I am very excited about this! I want the new dashboard now! I wish we knew a date :( oh well... at least its almost fall.
