Why Can't We Be (Rock) Friends

RB&GH.jpg

Many of you out there that had both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III near Christmas last year will remember bitterly the whole hub-bub surrounding the patch that would resolve the compatibility issues between the peripherals for the two games on the PS3. In fact, the issue still hasn't been resolved and back then Sony seemed to be taking a backseat approach to the whole event; however, it looks like Sony doesn't want a repeat of these issues and recently released a few statements on their blog about compatibility concerns for the next generation of music games: Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution.

We have been working closely with Neversoft and Activision, Harmonix and Konami to ensure that PlayStation 3 guitars and drum sets will all feature a basic level of gameplay compatibility. For the most part, this means that the titles with musical peripherals will work with the other's software. A few specific examples include: Guitar Hero: World Tour's guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami's Rock Revolution software. Of course each of these great games have their own specific cool features that may not be compatible with the other controllers, but this is our first big step in bringing a level of compatibility to music games that is sure to benefit PlayStation 3 consumers.

In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones.

Kudos to you Sony on being proactive; nevertheless, the article also mentions that they are still "working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market", which means it'll still be a while before something is worked out between Harmonix and Activsion. Oh well you can't win them all, but at least this round of music games won't be as expensive with tons of redundant peripherals, unless you want it to be.

Bravo, Sony!

This effort to make music game controllers more universal is tempting me to switch from a 360 to ps3. This is a smart move that I think a lot of people will welcome.

Anyone looking for a used 360 Rock Band 1 set up? :)

No kidding!

I bought Rock Band for PS3 and barely have room in my apartment for the drum set that came with it. The chances of me buying ANOTHER box full of instruments is about zero.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
