Final Fantasy Will Never Be Final
I hope you're sitting down for this one. We've learned that there are currently no plans to create a final game in the Final Fantasy series. Now before you think I'm getting my news stories from The Onion, I promise this was actually part of a real interview. Speaking with Gamasutra, Final Fantasy Producer Shinji Hashimoto had this to say about the series coming to an end:
"The term 'Final' in the title doesn't mean 'last,' but the teams behind it see it as a term for 'ultimate,' and as long as there are creators that are wanting to make Final Fantasy games, we will probably keep going."
At the snail's pace new entries in the series are being released, we should be on Final Fantasy XX at about the same time I return to Florida for a life of yelling at kids to stay off of my lawn. We still have the spinoffs though, and they're not stopping anytime soon. Hashimoto goes on to say:
"Well, when it comes down to it, it's up to the fans' needs, and we don't feel that there's actually a certain number that we should stop at," he says."But each Final Fantasy series has a lot of unique characters, and a world, and we receive lots of feedback from fans, saying, 'We want to see more of this character!' or, 'We want to see more of this situation!' So, we take those into account, and try to create new side stories based on that. So we're not necessarily conscious of a certain limit that we have to stop at."
Does that mean we'll eventually see a Final Fantasy VIII-2? Was I the only one who enjoyed the wacky antics of sad-sack Squall and the orphan brigade? It is one of my favorite titles in the series, so much so that I convinced my friends to use the piano version of "Eyes on Me" in their wedding ceremony. That really doesn't pertain to the story though.

I would love a follow-up to 8, but I highly doubt we'll ever see that happen. Oh Zell...
Actually, I too liked FFVIII (I absolutely fell in love with Quistis and Fujin...), and felt the first disk was a strong introduction. But, from the third disk on, things got a little too out there for me.
And I don't understand why everyone complains about the sequels/spin-offs. The only that was bad was DoC, and even then it wasn't terrible.
Huhh... I can't believe someone asked about a FINAL Final Fantasy??? Each story, world and characters are unique, and they do try to vary the gameplay from time to time. Hence it's not like they're really sequals to each other.
Sorry though, I wasn't a big fan of VIII's story... but I loved the alchimey system. I'd love to see that worked into a new game.
Personally I'd love a sequel to VIII. I think it is so much better than, the very much over rated, VII & the whiny Cloud.
If they ever did, I would also like them to make Triple Triad a full game, I love that also. Again so much better than Tetra Master & Blitzball (I despise Blitzball).

Hell yeah I'm all about a FFVIII sequel! Oh Zell. Oh Kiros. Poor, poor Kiros.. so shortchanged, you beautiful man you.
We should all start a FFVIII lovers fan club, maybe have weekly meetings and eat cheetoes. Really, I just need an excuse to eat processed cheese puffs!
FF8 is on my top 5 list of favorite videogames.
And I just love Zell to bits.
That's the only reason I'm hesitant about a sequel. I don't want to see them mess up Zell.
That said, if they did a follow-up to FF8 (and kept the characters intact), I'd hope they also make an AC style movie. I'd love to see all the characters come to life like the FF7 cast did in Advent Children.
psh, i want a remake of Final Fantasy VI. That's what got me into rpgs in the first place.
Wow, I always thought people disliked VIII. At least over at the other forum I go to anyway.
I'll jump on that bandwagon. I was so stoked when they came out with an actual triple triad card game. I bought all I could.
I don't want the FF series to ever end. Each game is always a new and exciting experience and I'd hate to see that end.
There are now so many FF spin-offs that I can't afford the money or the time to play them all. I don't mind it being that way, though. It's not like Square Enix are churning out "bad" games in these spin-offs and it not impacting their creative efforts with original IPs either.
this is my favorite Final Fantasy as well. After this one is FFVII and then FFX. my least favorite is definitely FFX-2
I'll admit, I still want a remake for FFVII- one reason being my friend borrowed the game about.. three years ago and still hasn't gotten to the end of disk one.
But hey, I liked VIII also, (even though I wasn't into the love story at all). and wouldn't mind if that got a sequel or whatever first.
