I Will Be Level 70: Chapter One

AgyemanDoctor.jpg

I will be Level 70 by November 13th, I will be Level 70 by November 13th, I will be Level 70 by November 13th...

Friday afternoon I picked up the World of Warcraft Battle Chest, because if I'm going to do this I'm doing it right. After a few hours downloading patches, fighting with the installation screen for not taking my Burning Crusade code, and getting my account set up I was able to roll my character. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions on race and class and in the end I took the slightly clichéd route and went with the unnaturally attractive Blood Elves. Since I had just come off of being a warrior in Final Fantasy XI I decided to go with a caster and chose Warlock who I've found a nice mix of magic and melee, plus I get a nifty pet to keep my company during lonely hours grinding.

How did my first 12 levels go? Find out after the jump!

Welcome to Azeroth

I got through the opening cutscene which explained the following to me:

For nearly seven thousand years, the high elves cultivated a shining magical kingdom deep within the forests of northern Lordaeron. But five years ago, the undead Scourge invaded Quel'Thalas and drove the elves to the brink of extinction. Led by the evil death knight Arthas, the Scourge destroyed the mystical Sunwell, thereby severing the elves from the source of their arcane power. Though the scars of that conflict are evident, the remaining elves have banded together and retaken much of their homeland. Calling themselves "blood elves", these grim survivors are committed to regaining the vast powers they once commanded. Inspired by the leadership of their beloved prince, Kael'thas Sunstrider, the blood elves now seek out new sources of arcane magic and the means of defending their land against the undying horrors of the Scourge.

Actually I had to get that off the official site, and I still have no idea what anyone is talking about. I've invented my own back story for my character. See Agyeman was orphaned at a young age and spent his childhood trying to find a home. After a stint with a street-wise teen named Dodger, Agy struck out on his own to discover his own roots which lead him to Eversong Forest, where his real quest begins.

Dickensian narrative aside, my first few minutes was once again trying to acclimate myself to the controls. I'm not a huge PC gamer and I'm running the game off my laptop so my biggest issue is always trying to get the camera just right. Warcraft thankfully doesn't have many camera problems and I spent less time fighting the camera than I did when playing other MMO's. That's the boring technical stuff though. I wanted to start questing!

Several Hours Later...
How does killing 8 flying worm things send a message that we're serious about reclaiming the land. They just keep respawning which has me thinking that perhaps the Blood Elves should work on magic that prevents asexual reproduction. Agyeman started off pretty damn weak, and I didn't quite understand this mana explosion ability he has, but I was polite and did quests for Warlock trainers and was given my very own Imp! I call him Freakazoid because he's hyper and never shuts up. I send him to do my dirty work, and clean up after he's been rightfully slaughtered by walking corpses. This brings me to another issue I have experienced. Twice during my adventure I've been strategically picking off monsters when all of a sudden a mob of umm... mobs runs at me. Out of nowhere I've been torn apart by the residents of the Dead Scar. What is incurring their wrath...aside from the genocide of their undead asses?

I've yet to party with the guys who got me back into the game because they prefer to go raiding instead of collecting the heads of Murlocs. I've teamed with a few random people to complete some of the earlier quests, and since I'm not the friendliest person in the world, silent questing with another person really can't be beat. Once we finish our common task, we go our separate ways. I feel sort of like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman before she met Richard Gere and ditched the blonde wig. I haven't been slipped a tip though, which is kind of damaging to my ego.

Every moment I am away from the game I think about Agyeman, sitting in the Bazaar of Silvermoon City, hoping that people purchase the items he has on auction. The first twelve levels were an addictive breeze to get through, but I feel like the hard part is just around the corner. If I sacrifice my entire life this week I am confident I can get to 30 by the end of this coming weekend. I was already warned but Fruit Brute that he will come into Azeroth and drag me kicking and screaming out if I neglect the rest of the world. What he doesn't know won't hurt me, right?

I will be Level 70 by November 13th, I will be Level 70 by November 13th, I will be Level 70 by November 13th

Was "Freema" already taken as a name? :)

Good choice on the belf, and good choice on the lock. A few words of advice from a former lock player (who defected to rogue):

I assume you have your voidwalker at this point. He is your best friend, and will be with you, consistently, well into the upper levels. Don't go too much out of your way at 20 to get the succubus, unless you really want that soul box. Stick with the vw.

You should put your talents into demonology, since you're not going to be doing any PvP with your deadline. The demonology tree will give you the Felguard, who's basically the only useful PvE pet after the voidwalker.

Are the Walking Dead attacking you because of your pet? Do you have him on aggressive? If so, change that immediately (before you group for any instances, especially) and learn to love the pet commands. I had a permanent crook in my left hand from the motion telling my pet to attack, but better that than having a loose pet go everywhere it wants.

Oh! And one more very very crucial important thing. Ghostlands is my favourite place ever. I took every one of my toons there for lvls 11-20. You get mad money, which is nice, and the quests are all kinda fun. After you group and get rid of Dar'Khan, your reward is going to be a sword you can use, a bow you can't use, a staff, or a dagger. You might be tempted, if you haven't been to Orgrimmar's weapon master yet, to pick up the dagger. DO NOT. :) The Staff of the Sun is a kick-ass item you'll want to cherish forever and ever. Dude in the Northeast corner of Org can train you on staves.

Let's just say that last piece of advice comes from a friend who took the dagger instead of the staff. Yeah, a friend, that's it! :P

I wish you all the best of luck Doctor, maybe one day I will too tell the tales of how when the burning crusade was released, that at midnight on the dot I created a blood elf Paladin, dropping my shaman for the good of the guild, missing out levelling to 70 with them.

Again wishing you all the best of luck, and remember to at least have fun.

How charming of your friends to rope you into WoW and then cast you adrift on the shores of Lowbiedom.

How exciting, my first comment!

TheDoctor good luck on your journey. I am very excited to hear about your adventures! It's very interesting that you are playing a warlock as your first class, I picked it first as well! That was way back when though, when the only good warlock was an undead warlock; Also battlegrounds didn't exist!

Mobs are mobbing you? Well it could be your pet as arkadin pointed out. Here's a tip, If a mob's name is yellow they are passive and will ignore you; However if it's red then they will attack you on sight! There's also a whole lot of boring details about sight radius, but I'll spare you. haha :P

I'd love to group with you if that's ok. I can understand if you can't though, soloing quests is much faster for leveling.

I have a 70 Priest (ironic that I picked warlock first huh? haha) named Kappo on the Detheroc server, so feel free to whisper "Hi!"! :D

Oh, the zombie attack is a scripted event.

They run up towards Silvermoon and some guards kill them. Any noobs in the way get eaten.

You are advised to stay near the wall :)

What server you playing on doctor? = )

Hey, I'm kinda in the same boat. Just started playing WoW about a month ago after being a die-hard (4+ years) CoH addict. I'm on the Steamwheedle Cartel server and currently have a lvl 44 Tauren Druid named Cowabunga, a lvl 27 Blood Elf Rogue named Macktor, and a lvl 13 Orc Warlock named Broxaar. I'm also running with a gay guild, which is cool, too. Good luck on your quests!

Everyone asking his server can always Armory him at http://www.wowarmory.com/

And anyone bored on Andorhal can go right ahead and message me for runs. ^_^ At least until WotLK comes out >_>

Thanks Hane

I also did mention it already in the comments section. Again I'm on Norgannon.

Hey Doc, good luck. I too am a Belf Warlock who just hit 58 and entered Outland. Take the advice on demonology, get all pets because the quests give decent exp. and good side items and use at least 5 points to get instant corruption in the Affliction tree. I'm on the Duskwood server (Rahkesh), any other gaymers on that server hit me up. Good Luck doc and umm, prepare to sacrifice your real soul to hit 70 by WotLK.
