Wrath Of The Lich King Taken Off Ice

Well, it looks like all the MMOs are kicking it into high gear this week. With Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning kicking off it's headstart yesterday, leading up to its launch that will be happen on Thursday, it seems that the giant MMO gorilla in the room decided that it was losing some of the attention it receives from over 10 million users. You know which gorilla I'm talking about, that one that looks so cute and inviting until it holds you hostage and sucks up 2 years of your life because it let you be a bear tank (no, I'm not bitter). That's right, I'm talking about your best friend and worst enemy, World of Warcraft.

So to help focus some light back onto the World of Warcraft franchise, Blizzard announced today the official release date of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for the game, which will be in stores on November 13th. So two months from now, you can get travel to the arctic Northrend and continue leveling your characters to the expanded level cap of 80. The expansion will also be featuring the new character class, the Death Knight, which adds a pestilence and frost based melee/tank hybrid class to the ranks. Lots of new areas and dungeons await players, with the culmination of their efforts resulting in a confrontation with the Lich King Arthas.

Along with giving us the release date, Blizzard has also stated that the basic game will retail for $39.99 or for a nice $69.99 players can get the Collector's Edition which includes:

  • The Art of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, a 208-page book featuring never-before-seen images from the game.
  • An exclusive in-game pet: Frosty, the baby frost wyrm.
  • A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, the Wrath of the Lich King intro cinematic with director's commentary and more.
  • The official soundtrack CD, containing 21 epic tracks from the game, along with exclusive bonus tracks.
  • A mouse pad featuring a map of the newly opened continent of Northrend.
  • Two World of Warcraft Trading Card Game March of the Legion?, starter decks, along with two exclusive cards available only in the Collector's Edition.

The MMO gauntlet has been thrown down, and I think it will be exciting to see how things shape up in the next few months for the MMO market, although I'm hoping that the lesser known Chronicles of Spellborn gets a piece of the pie too.

For some reason, I'm compelled to buy the Collector's Edition... I got the CE for the original game and BC, so I guess I "have to"...

Blizzard is suprisingly scared of Warhammer it's kind of funny..they knew they were gonna lose some players to it but the ammount of extra effort they've put in to try to hemorage there lose of players is ...scary.....10 million players seems like enough to not panic, but I guess i don't run blizzard so maybe i don't know = )
