Free Game: Mega Man 7 - NES Style

Couldn't get enough tasty NES retro-ness with Mega Man 9? Well, if you're on a PC then you're in luck. Reinventing one of the more meh releases in the series lengthy history, this Japanese fan fueled project lovingly turns back time on Mega Man 7 and makes it actually worth playing. Originally seen on the SNES back in 1995, this remake takes it back to 1985 by dropping the 16 bit visuals for the Blue Bomber's classic 8 bit threads. The remake love doesn't stop there though. This iteration of the not-so-classic removes the largely useless cut scenes and does away with Mega Man X style level progression that limits the player to four levels at a time for a much more streamlined and authentically "Mega" experience.
Sadly, Mac users are out of luck for now since the remake is not an emulated ROM hack, but I certainly hope that someone out in the Internet Land finds it in their interest to port this. Maybe with enough interest the people behind this remake will be able to find a way to make Mega Man 8 half as interesting as this. To get in on the fun, follow the link below and use the "ver.final2" link found there. It shouldn't be long before your back in nostalgia fueled bliss, playing what the original game should have been.

Thanks, but I'll stick with the SNES version.
@Shin Gallon;
Hey, I'm not gonna pretend to know what you like, but you really should consider giving it a chance before you knock it. ;)
I've played it and it's not by any means a hack-job or a waste of time. You can tell the love that went into it from the moment you start it up. The game is solid, clearly coded from the ground-up for optimal speed and style, full of awesome spritework, and very tight on controls/level-design.
It's actually hard to tell you're playing a fan-game - looks and feels every bit as good as the NES days. I'm not by any means saying the SNES game isn't good, but it clearly had some issues when compared to older games in the series.
Anyway, yeah - for anyone who's even remotely interested, it's an AWESOME game. :D

I'd like to check this out. I don't know why people hate on MM7. (At least most of the time I read articles on it.) I thought it was a good installment of the series.
"...and does away with Mega Man X style level progression that limits the player to four levels at a time..."
Nooo, don't go blaming that nonsense on X. I know at least the first few X games gave you access to all 8 bosses from the start, though I'm not sure about the later ones (I kinda try and forget the later ones, especially the one where X became a pacifist and refused to fight and they introduced some totally lame third character.) I'm pretty sure Mega Man 7 was the first non-portable game to pull that 4-boss nonsense... that, the "cartoony" graphics, and the low difficulty of the game made it feel like they were turning the original series into a "kiddie" version.
Well, I'd have to boot into my Windows partition to play it since there's no Mac support, and 99% of the time when I boot into Windows the Team Fortress 2 icon becomes a black hole from which my pointer cannot escape.
That said, I really liked 7 as it was, and really liked the upgraded graphics vs the 8-bit games in the series.
