Halo 3 Recon Adding Prequel Content, Where's The Chief?

From Microsoft's keynote for the Tokyo Game Show comes a more detailed trailer for the Halo 3 expansion, now dubbed Halo 3 Recon. The trailer shows a character rising from the rubble who is definitely not Master Chief, and not even a Spartan for that matter. It also looks like the Superintendent AI featured in the previous trailer will be helping out along the way. Microsoft has kindly provided a fact sheet that reveals some much needed information about this mysterious expansion.

First off, this is a prequel expansion. So this tells the story of what is still happening on Earth between when Master Chief leaves early in Halo 2 to when he returns in Halo 3. The star this time around is an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) who is tasked with cleaning up the Covenant invasion of Earth. Because this character isn't a Spartan he won't be able to go Rambo like Master Chief can, meaning the gameplay in Halo 3 Recon will involve more stealth. Of course, it wouldn't be Halo without multiplayer, and so in addition to the new campaign expansion (which can be played in 4 person co-op) there will also be new multiplayer maps with full forge support.

Bungie seems to be going all out for this expansion with a new campaign as well as new multiplayer maps. And no wonder, since word has it that Halo 3 Recon will be a full retail game when it releases in Fall 2009. No word on if it will be made available as DLC as well, but if it's as big as it sounds, this might stay as just a retail release.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
