Nintendo Reviving A Classic Franchise Tomorrow?

wii-characters.png

After the complete first-party let-down of this year's E3, Nintendo hopes to right some of those wrongs at the ever approaching Tokyo Game Show. French gaming site Gamekyo seems to have gotten some insider information, since they are making a very official sounding statement that Nintendo will reveal a new Wii game that is continuing a classic Nintendo franchise that "everyone is waiting for." And we won't have to wait long to find out what it is, since this new game is supposed to be revealed at the Nintendo press conference tomorrow, Oct 2.

There are a ton of classic Nintendo franchises that I would be eagerly waiting for an update, so it's hard to pick a specific one to speculate about. The most likely candidate is probably a new Kid Icarus game, since that qualifies as a classic franchise that fans have been begging Nintendo to revisit for years. And Pit's popularity only grew thanks to his inclusion in Super Smash Bros Brawl. The other likely possibility is that it could be a new Earthbound for Wii. That too is a classic series, and has an even more rabid fan community than Kid Icarus (myself among them). I even feel like there is a possibility that the new Wii game could emerge as a new F-Zero or Pikmin, despite their comparatively lower sales. And lets not count out Nintendo classics that haven't been seen for a long time, like Punch-out, Startropics, Adventures of Lolo, Pilotwings, and Mystical Ninja. Heck, the way Nintendo's been going lately, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Gyromite 2 complete with an updated R.O.B. With Nintendo's back catalog of games, the revival of a classic franchise could be just about anything.

So who else is excited for this? Nintendo is finally going to show something to prove to its steadfast fanbase that they're still thinking of us, so what do you want it to be? Voice you wish for which classic Nintendo franchise is in most need of a revival on the Wii.

I'm going to go with either Kid Icarus, because it would go a long way toward appeasing players who want a more classic gaming experience, or Pilotwings, which would fit more with Nintendo's current drive to the casual market.

It's most likely not a new EarthBound unless they're bringing Mother 3 to WiiWare, as the game's designer has said he will never work on another game.

If it were a new StarTropics, I would cream my pants right there and then.

It has to be one of Nintendo's worst kept secrets, Kid Icarus. Too many people "in the know" have been talking about it for over a year.

I really want it to be a revival of either Ice Climbers (in the vain of Last Dance article material Donkey Kong Jungle Beat) or an online version of Balloon Fight that's basically all deathmatch.

I too would like to see Ice Climbers, but I think the likelihood is geared more toward Kid Icarus (wouldn't mind at all) or Pikmin (seems appropriate--but never played 'em).

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Where's my StarFox? :'(

My guess would be Pilotwings (a logical choice for the Wii) or Kid Icarus (only because of the long-held rumors). I thought some key Nintendo person did mention a while back that they are working on a Pikmin game already? I hope so....that's the only franchise I really know from the list given.

Oh please, let it be Clu Clu Land 2!

No whammies, no whammies...STOP!

Could it also be the start of classic revivals? There was a lot of talk before the Wii came out of games like "Super Mario 4" and such using NES/SNES graphics. Look at Mega Man 9.

Could also be done like the new Wario Game. 2-D platformer with lots of old school charm. Does not seem that hard to program either.

end of the day since i first heard the ds announcement ive been saying its a great oportunity to bring back loads of classic 64 games, so in a way im not bothered, concidering we all know about the kid i hope their leaving that for tokyo where there should be at least 3 other classics so 5 in total that would make up for the tone of mario what evers and pokemon top downs.

MAKE ME WANT TO BUY A WII AND DS!

I thought Mystical Ninja was a Konami franchise. Either way, I would love to play as Goemon again. Those games were awesome! XD (I had the N64 one, as well as the first one for the SNES.)

Doubt it's Mother 3. From what the translation group has been saying (almost done, by the way! They're just in the testing stage so it'll be only a month or two more, hopefully), it's a really damn hard game to translate because all of the code is pretty hardwired to the smaller amount of characters in Japanese words compared to English words. Hoping for Kid Icarus or Pikmin, myself! :)

Either Kid Icarus, Pilotwings, DK, F-Zero or Pikmin, or at least two of them... I hope!

If I remember right I read somewhere earlier this year that they are already planning on making a new Pikmen. So I too would lean towards Kid Icarus. If it is I hope they rerelease the first one somehow, I have never played that one but always wanted to. I wish they'd do a budget line of DS games, like they did for the Advance, except put 2 or 3 NES games on one card.
