Pandora: Linux Based Handheld Officially Available For Pre-Order
If you're anything like me, you've been keeping a watchful eye on the Pandora, the open source hand held. Unlike most consoles, this system is being created by hobbiests, not a large corporation. Without going into major details, the system has some very nice specs for the price point.
The console officially went on sale (pre-orders) yesterday for the low low price of 197.77 GBP (~330 USD) internationally. Only 3000 units will be sold during the first batch, with another shipment being sold in 2009. In short: If you want one soon, you should order it now.
Where you can buy it:
- Germany: http://www.gp2x.de/shop/index.php/cPath/34
- The rest of Europe: http://openpandora.org/retro.html
- Turkey & The Middle East: http://www.pandoratr.com/

The hand held is scheduled to ship at the end of November. For more details, consult their webpage.

I thought these things were supposed to be illegal and if so why are you championing them?
It's not at all illegal to produce a completely new console that runs Linux. It's also not illegal to write/run emulators that run on it. What is a bit gray is the legality of the ROMs that might be run in some of these emulators. However, even for console emulators, there are a fair number of freely released/public domain ROMs that are available. Plus, beyond emulation, since it is a completely open platform, this is a great place for an independent developer to get their feet wet with console game development. Not only that, but this device will likely also have PDA and MID functionality. It's a completely legit device... and I want one! :-D
