StarCraft II is THREE Games

starcraft2threegames.jpg

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Blizzard is testing that theory out with Starcraft 2. They announced today at Blizzcon that Starcraft 2's single player campaign will be split into three separate games, the first being the Terran campaign, Terrans: Wings of Liberty. This will eventually be followed by Zerg: Heart of the Swarm, and Protoss: Legacy of the Void. Multiplayer will still give players their choice of the three races regardless.

Each campaign will be around thirty missions, which is the total size of all three campaigns in the original Starcraft. Blizzard's Rob Pardo noted that the decision was necessary to maintain the quality of the product, the alternatives either being a long delay of the game, or a scaling back of the campaigns.

[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products," said Pardo.

No word yet on release dates or, more importantly, the pricing of these games. To be honest, these better be awesome campaigns if they want to charge full price for all three, because I really don't know if I want to pay a hundred fifty dollars just to play the three races I was expecting.I get the feeling there is going to end up being a LOT of piracy by angry Starcraft fans, no matter how much they charge for the second and third.

It's a good thing Activision merged with Blizzard. Without that we wouldn't have gotten the chance to pay for our game more than once.

But I can see this work if you get a discount on the 2 last games

Wow... this just seems silly! I get that they want each campaign to be epic and all, but pay for the game and two expansions just to get the three races? That's just silly.

Hmm, It's disappointing that this won't be one game...

However if the campaigns are well thought out and not loaded down with unit tutorials then maybe this might work out.

I don't like the idea of paying for three games when they could have been one. But if Starcraft II is as good as the first, then maybe I might change my mind.

I guess compared to Nintendo's DSi announcement,I'd rather buy 3 of the same game with actual added value, than 3 Nintendo DS's. Two of the same system in one generation is already enough for me.

If they're going to be "stand-alone" expansions, then they're definitely going to be full price, unfortunately.

I don't like RTS games, just not my cup of tea, but I'm going to pirate theses for the sake of this Munny-Grubbing filthy act.

Well there went all of my interest in the game down the crapper. Even if full fledged titles, it's only part of an entire entry. We have set trilogies like Prince of Persia but those felt like full games each time, this most likely won't. I'll hold off now.

At first I was like: Whoa, three games for the price of one. First stage: Cellular level, where you RPG a single unit, second stage ... But then I remembered this was the Age of the Horse Armor. I love how Blizzard RTS used to progress a story through the different factions. How will they find proper climaxes for all 3?

Yes, I am on the pirate train with bearfamily on this one. They do not deserve money.

Wow, looks like "Actard" isn't making enough money on WoW that they have to split a highly-anticipated game into three parts. $150 to play all three campaigns? And if people want to play multiplayer they all have to have the same game parts? Wow, THAT won't be confusing at ALL.

Nexus said:

Um no, Sgt. Sausagepants stated that you'll be able to play multiplayer with any of the races.
So this really only affects people who are interested in the single player aspect of the game. To whom I belong.
I'm kinda iffy about this, because with Blizzard's track record for RTS games it could turn out really good. They could be making each part truelly epic. Then again, I never did care much for human factions in any genre of games.
I have to say though that all these shenanigans with PC games nowadays are also making me strongly consider turning to piracy (which I never have before now). Not as a punishment per se, but because what these companies are doing is negative towards legit buyers and legit buyers alone.

I find it sad that multiple people have to use an excuse or a reason to turn to piracy...your still saying "I don't like what your charging for your product so i'm gonna steal it". Most people that play starcraft do it for online or tournament play, which we're lead to believe you can get with just the initial game purchase, and if the game is really 3 times longer than it was last time, paying 3 times as much isn't unheard of, specially given the choice to still just buying the original. If your gonna commit piracy just do it... but saying these companies don't deserve the money while you steal their games calling them money grubbers....your the one trying to enjoy a game that costs millions of dollar to create, for free...to me that makes you the money grubber :(

I in turn find it sad that the industry refuses to acknowledge that their business model is seriously flawed, with games becoming increasingly shorter each generation, coming laden with restrictive copy protection and bugs and generally a lot of lies bundled. I don't really pirate, I just refuse to buy new games, wait for them to drop to half price - which usually takes about 1 year - before I even make a move. Saves me from a lot of headaches buying premature relseases, cash-ins and so on. There is a reason people prefer indie, retro and downloadable games these days.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
