Wii Speak Details

I'm as thrilled as anyone about Club Nintendo coming to American shores, but that's not the only reveal that Nintendo had for gamers today. In addition to that announcement, they touted a bunch of games that we've already heard about, and promised that they would be producing more Wiis and DSes than ever before to satisfy the seemingly unending demand.
But inside the epic Nintendo press release was some detailed information regarding the curious Wii Speak. The Wii Speak Channel arrives on November 16, and will use the Wii Speak microphone, which will sit on top of your television. Buying the microphone for $29.99 will also include a code that will allow you to download the Wii Speak Channel for no additional charge. Up to four people in different locations who have already exchanged Friend Codes can chat with each other over the internets. Adorably, when you're using Wii Speak, your Mii appears on your TV screen and mimics your chat. You can also leave audio messages for your friends and family or use it to narrate captions for your photos. (But really, is anyone going to do that?)
I actually may find myself using Wii Speak because I am super-excited to get my hands on Animal Crossing: City Folk (which launches the same day, 11/16), and you can use the mic to chat with other players in the game. Unfortunately, seeing as how it's the only game so far to be announced that uses the peripheral, I'm not sure how useful it'll be on its own. I don't think I've ever used the Xbox LIVE chat feature when I wasn't already playing a game, even if the person I was chatting with wasn't playing the same one. So as cute as it would be to see my Mii chatting with someone else, it's not as much fun to just have a conversation than it would be to chat while playing a game together. Ah well, baby steps, Nintendo... baby steps...

Just a heads up, Animal Crossing ships with the headset in box. No need to buy one separate. =]
