Google Closes Lively, I'm Reminded That Lively Exists(ed)

sad_bear.png

Remember Lively? It was that Google built 3d chat system released earlier this year. No? Don't feel bad, I didn't remember it until I saw that it was being shut down. I launched it a couple of times, it wasn't terrible, but it was no Second Life killer (obviously).

We will shut down Lively on December 31, 2008. Embedded rooms in blogs and other web pages will continue to show an image, but users will no longer be able to enter Lively rooms and interact.

Between now and the end of the year we encourage you to capture all your hard work by taking videos and screenshots of your rooms. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. We've learned a lot about how users interact in rich social environments, and we hope you've enjoyed your time with Lively.

My cynicism aside, it is always sad when lots of hard work, and good engineering go to waste. It's not often that Google makes a major misstep in engineering, it is things like this that cause people to be "re-purposed". If you want to give Lively a try, you can always hit up their webpage before December 31st.

Didn't Google buy Lively from another company 9or am I thinking something else?) Regardless this may not be as much of a waste as you think. Google manages information, and the information they collected on human interaction will do a great deal to inform them on future and current projects.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
