How Much Space Do You Need For That Game Install?

xboxinstall.jpg

One of my favorite features of the New Xbox Experience is definitely the ability to install and play a game from the hard drive. I can only fit one or two games on there at a time, but the lack of that aggressive disk drive spinning sound has made my game time much more pleasant, since it doesn't sound like my Xbox is going to shatter into a million pieces at any given moment anymore. Faster load times (for the most part) aren't a bad thing either.

Microsoft hasn't set up an official database of game sizes yet, but a number of forums have come together to document the different sizes of most games for the system, as well as record a few idiosyncrasies or benefits involved with a few different titles. For example, if you were hoping to install that Burger King trilogy of advergames, you're out of luck: Big Bumpin', Sneak King, and Pocketbike Racer all claim that "Installation is not supported," as well as Crackdown, Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2, and Quake II from the Quake IV bonus disk. The smallest file size appears to be 3.4 GB, while the largest is 6.8 GB, not including multi-disk games.

Those of you with Elites probably don't have to worry too much about the sizes of the various games, at least not for a while at least. For those of us with 20 or even 60 GB Pros, we likely have to pick and choose from just a few of our games, or make do with only installing the game we're currently playing the most. I had to delete all my demos and extraneous promotional crap that came with the hard drive to fit Far Cry 2 and Left 4 Dead onto mine, and that's only because I haven't got all that many XBLA games or marketplace videos. It's been out for a while, Microsoft, so don't you think it's about time you stopped gouging us on the price of that 120 GB hard drive?

Call me crazy, but I never found my 360 to be that noisy. Then again, I have an Elite, which may or may not be less noisy than a regular 360.
My PS3 on the other hand is crazy noisy. It's generally fine the first 20 minutes or so, but then it goes mad with the whirling.

I don't get it. Why can I go and buy an external 1TB hard drive for $150, but they want me to pay almost the same for 1/10th of the space? I think 'gouging' is a gross understatement.
