Nintendo's Really Cookin' On The DS

dscooking.jpg

Man, Nintendo doesn't know how else to improve your life, do they? I mean, Wii Fit has already taken over my life (not that I'm complaining, having lost 35 pounds), and when it came out, I was playing Brain Training every single freaking day trying to make myself smarter. Well, now Nintendo has released another "game" for the DS called Personal Trainer: Cooking which promises to walk you through recipes and turn you into a gourmet chef. It's like Cooking Mama... for reals!

"Personal Trainer: Cooking is the first in a new line of Personal Trainer titles from Nintendo designed to help users enrich their lives and learn new skills in fun and interesting ways," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Whether you're cooking for yourself, your family or your friends, everyone in the household benefits from these tasty recipes for months and years to come."

The thing is, while it sounds crazy to be reading a recipe off of a Nintendo DS screen in the kitchen, they've kind of added some really clever features that makes me a little bit intrigued. There's a bunch of different recipes that you can search by ingredients, calories or cooking time, and then you can go ahead and customize them with your own notes. You can bring the DS with you to the grocery store to shop for the ingredients based on the on-screen list. There's videos that instruct you on specific cooking techniques like julienning vegetables. You can even scale the recipe ingredients based on how many people you want the dish to serve, which is a very nifty feature. Oh, and when your hands are full while cooking? There's a voice recognition feature so you can simply tell it to go on to the next step.

The thing's only $20, and I have to admit it sounds kind of cool. Although I'm sure I'll be able to resist the next games in the series, Personal Trainer: Math and Personal Trainer: Walking. Because I already know I suck at math, and Wii Fit's got me covered with the whole fitness thing. But good try, Nintendo! You won't get me that easily!

(Man, being in europe finally has an advantage. This has been out for months here.) As much as I love the recipes in this one (I've actually made many of them), the Jamie Oliver has the awesome feature of letting you be able to put in your own recipes, and share them with others (not over, Wi-Fi, of course, this is Nintendo, but simply being able to save modifications to recipes is a huge benefit to me. I am constantly writing changes to recipes in my recipe books. But, the jamie oliver one is really more of a "game" while this is really more of a cookbook on your ds.

The voice recognition is cool until your boyfriend walks into the kitchen and starts yelling "continue".

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
