Singstar 2, Singstar Legends and Singstar Country Bring The House Down

5fsing.jpg

Sony's Singstar franchise has been a huge hit in Europe and has recently started to really catch on here in the US. You may remember my video review of the first Singstar for PS3 and how much I enjoyed it. Well, now the PS3 has added another Singstar game to its ranks and the PS2 gets two new titles as well.

Singstar Vol. 2 has thirty new songs spanning a variety of music styles and eras. Aerosmith, The Cure, Elton John, The Killers, Pink, The Mammas & Pappas and The Shins all make appearances on the disc and all include the original videos that go with the songs. What's nice about this disc is that the range of musical choices will provide a little something for all tastes.

This new disc also includes the new SingStar disc swapping mechanic that will allow you to swap out your current Singstar disc for another one. The songs on the second disc will then appear using the first discs interface and menu system. Not quite as concise as Rock Band's disc copy, but then again it also saves a lot of room on your hard drive.

Singstar Legends also hits the market with thirty new songs and this disc relies a bit more on older songs. Which is great for old fogies like me who like to sing their hearts out to the likes of Elvis, David Bowie, Ella Fitzgerald, The Jackson 5, The Smiths, Tom Jones and Tina Turner. This is definitely my favorite of the three discs and I would venture to say I would feel comfortable singing any of the songs on it. It's nice to see some attention being paid to music that came out more than thirty years ago.

Singstar Country rounds out the trifecta of karaoke madness. Now, not being a modern country music fan made this disc a little harder to love for me. Out of thirty songs I only recognized three: two Johnny Cash songs and a Willie Nelson track. I'm sure fans of Gnarls Barkley, Kenny Chesney, Jessica Simpson and Gretchen Wilson will love this one but personally I was hoping for a bit more classic country. Where's Patsy Cline (She's on the Legend's disc but not this one) and Dolly Parton? They seem conspicuously absent here. Perhaps a Country Legends disc in order?

All in all though, these three discs have a lot to offer to Singstar aficionados. Some of these songs are available for download through the SingStore but having them all in one place is nice. Any of these discs will be the perfect holiday gift for your favorite Singstar fan. I am personally really looking forward to Singstar Queen and Singstar Abba (coming soon!) to really round out my Singstar library.

Be sure to make the jump to check out the full songlist for each disc!
