Video: Animal Crossing City Folk Comparison
In my ever so humble opinion, one of the most obnoxious trends in this generation of gaming is those "comparison" videos that get released with each and every major title. Fanboys from each of the console camps search game footage frame by frame to detect the slightest "flaw" that no one in their right mind is going to really notice when they get the game home. I can almost hear their thoughts as I watch these video. Something along the lines of "is that prop texture lower res on the 360? Those lazy developers won't get my money!" or "this load time takes exactly 3 seconds and 10 frames longer on the PS3 edition. Playstation 3? Ha! More like Portstation Pee!" Unless these videos point out something truly remarkable, like show-stopping bugs or significantly different frame rates, I find the whole exercise to be silly and childish.
With this in mind, I'm not sure if the video above is supposed to be slight on the latest rendition of Animal Crossing, a profoundly self-aware art piece commenting on these interesting times in console gaming, or both. No matter what the intent, I couldn't stop myself from laughing when I found this. Contrasting the subtle but distinct differences in the life simulator over its console and handheld releases this video points out some interesting observations on the changes seen in the series' interfaces, presentations of the player's village and the many looks of Tom Nook. Part of Animal Crossing's charm is directly entwined with its quirky, lo-fi art style. Some things need to stay the way they are so that we can avoid terrible "reinterpretations" of classic characters. Besides, I think that the game might become something a little too scary if photo real versions of an angry Nook and this nephews were hounding me for rent money.
Is it just me or is this comparison desperately missing a critique on the differences between Mr. Resetti's masochistic forms of punishment?

I don't care about AC graphics, I just Nintendo would actually add new content to this game series. We're on the fourth game in the series and it's the same thing we've seen since the N64.
And who do the commercials target? Middle-aged housewives. Yeah, Animal Crossing might have been considered a core game once, but now it's just more Nintendo shovelware.
"And who do the commercials target? Middle-aged housewives."
I showed my mother the Gamecube version over 3 years ago, and she still plays it every day for a couple of hours. I think that housewives are the core audience.
With that said, I'm not buying her a Wii and City Folk for a grand total of $300 no mater how much she plays it. Because apparently she already owns it on gamecube.
as a student of literature and culture, let me be the first to say that it doesn't matter what the intent of the video is (though it's probably a slight). what it ACTUALLY is is indeed a profoundly funny self-aware art piece.
brills.
and kudos to Jack Spicer for the obscure poet award!
Well I want to purchase the game, because I know that I will still enjoy and have fun playing it. However, I do wish this title had deliver at least half of the potential it had.
I remember people dreaming that we could launch VC games from the in game house tv, or that our mailbox would be our Wii mail. The city does look rather disappointing, the drive there is going to get repetitive. There is but the least connectivity to the DS. When they look so much a like, I was expecting a lot more. I thought hey it looks just like the DS, maybe because I can play with my WW friends.
