A Next Metal Gear Is...A Chance To Touch Some Solid Snake
We all remember the insanely cryptic "A Next Metal Gear Is..." site that popped up two weeks ago, and the rampant rumors and speculation that surrounded it. Well, it looks like all the speculation can finally stop, as early scans of the latest issue of Famitsu show what looks to be some sort of Metal Gear game running on an iPhone. And though Kojima had previously said that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be Solid Snake's last game, the screen shots from the Famitsu scan clearly (or not so clearly since it's a blurry scan) showed Old Snake back in action.
Instead of letting the Rumor mill grind over the possibilities of an iPhone Metal Gear Solid for a few days, Konami confirmed the game and handed out some early details about what is officially being called Metal Gear Solid Touch. The game does in fact take place during or around the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, where you'll play as Solid Snake through 8 touch controlled stages. You can even unlock iPhone wallpapers from points earned in the game. Metal Gear Solid Touch is scheduled to release sometime next Spring.
Looking at the screen shots for Metal Gear Solid Touch, I'm very impressed, mostly by the iPhone hardware itself. Graphically, it looks on par with Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops on the PSP. And while I realize that graphics aren't everything, it's still impressive to get something looking that good out of something as small as the iPhone. Let's just hope that the technical wizards at Konami can get the gameplay right on the little touch screen device.
Is this what you were expecting? It sure isn't for me. I remember predicting it to be a tactical game like Metal Gear Acid, and that certainly isn't the case. Is this the right direction for Metal Gear to go in, or a potential low point for the franchise? I could see it going either way depending on how the gameplay is handled on the touch screen. But I'm staying optimistic remembering the great job that was done in bringing Metal Gear Solid to cell phones earlier this year.

I hope the twenty people with iPhones enjoy this game.
I'm guessing that you haven't been paying attention to sales numbers... the iPhone had sold 10 million units by October of this year. That doesn't even include the iPod Touch sales... people that will also be able to play this game. As of November, there have only been a little over 18 million PS3 units sold. And while PS3 sales are starting to slump, iPhones continue to sell well. There are more than enough users out there to have this game make sense for the platform.

as an owner of a ps3 and an iphone i am looking forward to see another metal gear soon and can hardly wait to finally touch snake. kind of hard to believe it's already 20 years since i first played metal gear on the msx-2.
by the way, the pictures of silent hill on the japanese touch.konami-site look quite promising, too.

Yeah I meant the twenty gamers. For sure its sold alot, but how many of those people are actually using it to play games?
