Namco Bandai And Mistwalker Working On New Blue Dragon DS

If you liked the first Blue Dragon, but what you've seen of the upcoming DS strategy title Blue Dragon Plus doesn't thrill you, don't worry. In a recent issue of Shonen Jump, Namco Bandai and Mistwalker announced that they're teaming up again for another DS entry in the series, this one a real-time RPG. In Blue Dragon: Ikai no Kyojyuu, instead of controlling any of the characters from the Xbox 360 RPG, you create an avatar and guide it through the game. Otherwise, the game should appeal more directly to fans of the first, as long as they don't mind the scale being reduced to a few square inches.
The game is due next year in Japan, and no North American release is confirmed. Hideo Baba from Namco's Tales of Vesperia will be joining the first game's creators, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Akira Toriyama, to work on the DS game, so it retains a pretty decent pedigree.
While I don't see this game being in direct competition with Dragon Quest IX, it's nice to hear about new, ambitious RPGs for Nintendo's smallest system, especially since the existance of the DSi apparently signals they're in no great rush to dramatically upgrade the hardware. Too many of the past year's best RPGs on the DS were remakes, with all the benefits and baggage that entails, so I welcome new content, even if it's just a sequel to a lukewarmly-received console game.
