Sony Talks About Sony: PS2 Downloads, Netflix, Hard Drives
2008 has been quite a year for our friends at Sony, PS3 is on an upswing, the PS2 is still going strong, the PSP is... well bless the little guy's heart he's trying. GamePro editor Sid Shuman sat down with Sony's John Kohler to discuss the the ghosts of Sony's past, present, and future.
On the subject of PS2 downloads on PS3:
We're absolutely interested, but there are some technical hurdles there that we have to overcome first. But this is something that we're absolutely interested in.
I own one of the PS3's that is fully backwards compatable and I still use it to play my collection of PS2 games as well as the new ones that are being released. I'd think they would focus on letting gamers play new PS2 games before they go back and offer digital downloads of old game.
On the chance of seeing streaming movies on the console:
We've concentrated most of our efforts on our download service, both rentals and downloads of movies and TV shows. Our efforts will continue to be there, because our customers want to own the content
Unless of course you delete that episode of How I Met Your Mother to clear up space. Sony needs to work a little more on defining ownership with video content. Can I ask follow-up questions next time?
On using 3rd party hard drives for extra storage:
We strongly encourage what you did - if you want to buy a third-party hard drive and install it, you are not voiding the warranty. That's something that's encouraged - we want PS3 owners to have as much space for content as possible.
This is where I wish so very much that Microsoft would allow the same hard drive practice. My poor 20GB hard drive is full and installing games isn't an option when you have no space. On the other hand, most of my PS3 storage space is filled with mandatory installs and constant patching. Who has installed a larger hard drive on their PS3? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My PS3 has a nice 350 gig hard drive I got from newegg.com... I don't think I am ever going to run out of space, and it's fantastic. It definitely makes me wish you could do that in the 360, as I've also developed a fondness for installing games on there... and unfortunately even my 120gig is running out of room.
I went on newegg and bought a 200 Gig drive for my PS3 love it, although i typically only watch movies on it anymore.
I've went with a smaller 160GB but it is faster at 7200RPM. I'm glad I went this route, as it is more than enough storage and everything loads just a little bit faster. Even the boot up time.
The biggest tip is to make sure you have a proper sized screw driver. I had one that looked to be about right... but wasn't. I ended up wasting a lot of time getting the stripped screw out.
I wish Microsoft would let you install your own HD as well. Granted, I wish they'd let you use mouse/keyboard on games the way Sony does, too, but that's why I've become predominantly a PC gamer except for console exclusive stuff like Rock Band or Ratchet and Clank...
I replaced the 80GB drive that came with my PS3 with a 320GB, and am using the original drive as an external storage/transfer drive. So far, it's been working out splendidly. :)
i own a 60GB ps3. if i decide to upgrade the memory would i then be able to play ps2 games on it then. if not,is there anything i can do to play ps2m games on my console?
