Wootini's Weekly Whenever Wii Fit Update #3

wiifitgoal.jpg

Tah-dah!

I know it's been a long time since I've written one of these updates, but that's because I hadn't reached my goal yet. I was determined to try and reach what Wii Fit called my ideal weight. At a BMI of 22, my ideal weight was determined to be 145. When I first started my Wii Fit experiment back in late May, I was 184 pounds, and 145 seemed like a pipe dream. On the left, you can see what I looked like when I reserved my copy of Wii Fit and modeled the free T-shirt I got as a bonus. On the right is me wearing the same T-shirt now. Needless to say, I regret asking for an XL, because I'm down to a medium now. And as you can see from the chart below, I finally reached my goal of 145 pounds, with a little bit extra. To be truly honest, I had weighed myself as I do every morning, and found my BMI was 22.05. So after I went for my 3 mile run, I decided to go back and weigh in again, just to see if I could drop that last half pound or so. And sure enough, I did. Now the trick is going to be keeping it off.

I'd like to offer up some final thoughts on Nintendo's unique product after the jump, and if you'd like to jump with me, I promise a special treat!

There you go. That's me, after all these months, and 40 pounds lighter. I can't believe I was carrying around 40 extra pounds, but there you go. This is for all you out there who were always writing comments in my updates saying "Pics or it didn't happen." There's your pic.

I will admit that Wii Fit only got me part of the way to my goal, but I believe that's what Miyamoto intended. I'd read that he'd never meant for Wii Fit to take the place of an exercise routine, but to inspire people to get up and get moving, in the hopes that it would push them to do more physical activities. Wii Fit definitely inspired me, I can tell you. I took my friend's advice and took up running, and now run three miles every other day (weather permitting). Wii Fit exercises alone lost me 25 pounds, and the other 15 came off by running.

In the beginning, I did only Wii Fit routines because I wanted to see how much weight could be lost simply by playing the game. I honestly didn't expect it to work, not really, and if it did, I figured I'd only lose 5-10 pounds, max. But as the pounds continued melting off and I saw every day how I was progressing (good and bad), I became determined to hit the goals that I had set for myself within the game. And once I put an end to my experiment and started doing outside exercises by running, I felt even better about myself. I'm now the same weight I was back in college, but I'm in better shape than I've been in my entire life. I've already run two 5K races, and have discovered I kind of enjoy running. I was actually upset when the weather here in New York took a turn with some winter storms, and I was unable to run at all for nearly an entire week.

I've changed my entire life around with regular exercise and a sensible diet. Not that I'm on an actual diet, but I simply watch what I eat. Not too much in the snacks or candy department, and I try to watch my portion control during meals. Eat less and exercise more. I know it's terrible, but as it turns out, it's true. They were right.

After reaching my ideal weight, Wii Fit congratulated me (although I really wish there was more of a fanfare when you succeeded at your goals), and then promptly reminded me that it's good to always have a goal. So I had to set another one. I would assume that you can simply set a goal to lose 0 pounds in the next two months, so you're trying to stay where you are, but since I had actually overshot a little, my new goal will be to put back on 0.7 pounds in the next two months! Awesome! I have to gain weight now!

I probably won't post another one of these updates again, because at this point, I'm hoping I'll be able to maintain my weight in the 145-150 range. Although if anything horrible happens and I backslide in a major way, I'll probably let you guys know. Hopefully this will be the end, though. I've reached my goal, and now I'm going to stay there. Thanks to all of you who offered up words of encouragement throughout my experiment. It was greatly appreciated. And I hope I, in turn, was able to inspire some people to pursue fitness or weight-loss goals themselves, whether or not it was through Wii Fit. I never intended this series to be an ad pushing the game. (Although I have to admit I'm a little disappointed that nobody from Nintendo called me to put me in an ad campaign!) Thanks, Nintendo! Who knew a videogame could get me in shape?

WOW... that is just bananas dude! It makes me so happy to see another person just transform their life like that.

I started running to lose a few kilos, and now I feel great, look great and now fit in to size 30 jeans. Life is good.

Well done mate!... now take off those shorts....

Congrats! You look great in the before AND the after pics tho, but I'm glad you did it for YOU. I just got one for xmas and I'm firing it up tonight, so I hope I can shed 45 pounds like you did, because that's my goal! :)

Well... at least a few ounces of that weight came from the haircut >_>

What? Me, bitter about not being in New York to offer my unbridled adoration in person? No no, whatever would give you that impression?

ougeoman said:

Man, you are an inspiration (and by that I mean sexy also). The only time I have been able to coax my bf in reading gaygamer is when I tell him you've updated your Wii Fit Diary. haha

Woot I have loved your journals keeping us up to date with how Wii Fit worked for you.

I actually broke down and bought a wii this Christmas as well as a Wii fit and honestly I bought the machine because of you.

I know that it won't make me lose all the weight that I so desperately need to lose but I hope it is a start. So far I've had it since Wed. and already lost seven pounds. Today I actually gained a little back and was crushed... but instead of eating more I just did more stuff on the Fit. I decided to do the third longest running stage instead of the second I had been doing and by god I felt it.

Anyway my whole life I've been fat and hopefully this will help (although I know it alone is not enough) to reverse that.

If it works I owe it all to your very revealing updates.

Amazing! Congratulations Wootini! I'll be sharing this article with a couple of friends, they'll love it.

I'm really glad it worked for you, the results are fantastic - I've just started losing weight myself, but I'm doing it the hard way and joined a gym (far superior view to the one on offer in the living room though!), mainly because I don't own a Wii and have no intention of buying one! lol

But yeah, congratulations, the hard work has really paid off. Hope I look that good in a few months!

Glad to be able to congratulate you on reaching your goal!!!! Looking good. Just one thing, even if you were not too happy with the additional 40 lbs. I can honestly say I thought you looked hot then.
I would not kick you out of bed now, but would have chained you to it before!!!! hahaha

congratulations, wootini!

that's really amazing! i could never afford the wii fit, but i similarly have gotten my fat ass into shape by eating pure, fresh, raw, living fruits and vegetables, juices, berries, and sprouts (raw food diet). being a raw foodist for a few months now, i can say i feel amazingly great!

the raw food alone helped me lose 20 lbs in 6 weeks, in addition to working out i lost 15 lbs on top of that in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

i feel amazing, and i share your accomplishment! it's no easy task at first, but it truly is a life-changing experience when you eat right, exercise, look and feel amazing!

PS: you are a hot stallion! if i ever visit new york, i will definitely be looking you up! we'll go running together!

Wow! Looks like you'll be having to turn in your bear costume in Animal Crossing. (Speaking of which, Drift moved away, I hope he ended up in Narnia)

I'm going to show this to my boyfriend. We started Wii Fit but then got lazy. But as soon as he gets back from his vacation we're gonna start dieting and exercising together. We'll start up Wii Fit again too!
