Final Fantasy XI To See Bannage

ffxi_misconduct.jpg

It is dark times in Final Fantasy XI. Square Enix has decided to take their terms of service agreement to heart and will be thinning the flock. A little over a year ago an exploit was discovered that allowed users to create certain items and rewards in various areas. A tempting choice, considering how easy it is to make money off in-game items in the auction house.

What happens next? Well, the developers have patched the hole... and are now reviewing logs to see who all took advantage of the system. The result is that Approximately 950 users will be either suspended or banned while evidence is gathered.

In November 2008, we discovered an issue that allowed players to create multiple items for certain treasures and rewards in areas such as Salvage and Assault by exploiting the game system.

The issue was fixed during emergency maintenance on November 26, 2008. However, we discovered that some players had already exploited the issue and used it to gain additional items before it was addressed. We then investigated more than a year's worth of logs throughout all areas.

As a result of the investigation, approximately 400 players were temporarily suspended based on the evidence gathered. Approximately 550 players who committed more serious misconduct had their accounts banned.

We are working hard to ensure that these kinds of issues do not occur again in FINAL FANTASY XI. However, if you discover any problems with the game system, please submit a GM call or fill out the feedback e-mail form to report the problems to us, instead of exploiting or spreading the issue.

We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Remember kids: Winners don't use exploits.

I cannot say I feel bad. You break the terms of service, you face the fury of the bannination. you dupe items to cheat the system to give you an unfair lead? what do they say about "cheaters never prosper"?

I totally agree however, take into account how long this game has been going on. I had played it for some time, and in comparison to WOW it consumes people lives. So when an opportunity arises to be able to take advantage of the company's oversight of course it will be exploited. I'm not saying what they did was right but by not being aware of the problem in advance they were only asking the glitch to be taken advantage of.

Oh, trust me, WoW is also known for consuming peoples lives. What with those folks that actually play entire teams all by themselves for starters.

If a determined player could get info on this glitch, I'm positive SquareEnix knew about it long before the average player. In any case, saying SquareEnix was asking for this is unfair, and even insulting. If someone had their computer broken into, would you also blame them for not running Window Update/RPM/YUM? If some physically weak person is beaten up, is he/she asking for it by not exercising?

I still feel they got exactly what they deserved, and here is why: they KNEW what they were doing carried a large risk of banning.

how can I say this? why are there only 1000 bans, both perma and temp. there are servers where no one has shown up missing yet. what does this mean? everyone was tight lipped. no forum postings, nada. this was passed by word of mouth, on the servers that discovered it, and guarded heavily. the EULA says that if you become aware of such an exploit, you report it to a GM. you don't profit off of it while others get the shaft.

Salvage drops are being adjusted btw. apparently, SE didn't think anything was wrong since people were successful with items/drops. gee, I wonder why they didn't realize that was broken sooner. hrm, maybe some people were ruining it for the rest of us?

LOL, I was happy when I heard about this. They knew what they were doing ahead of time, and got busted. Sucks for them that they might have done a lot before they decided to do this, like the guy with his 6 relics for example - but they totally deserved it. :) Areas like salvage are notorious for its drop rate, and they were basically getting triple the drops from the glitch.

Also, people were temp banned as well as perma banned. So, they probably already had warnings on their account or something along the lines to warrant the perma.
