Preview: LocoRoco 2
Over the holidays, I was fortunate enough to receive a preview copy of LocoRoco 2 from Sony. I was a big fan of the original and had been waiting to see what the new game would bring. Everything you loved about the original LocoRoco (the music, the art style, the simple controls) is back with some new additions that keep it interesting and fun.
Playing LocoRoco is easy. Simply use the PSP's bumpers to control the tilt of the playing field and use jumping and momentum to reach the end of the level. Along the way you collect little flowers to grow the size of your LocoRoco, find hidden Mui Mui friends and avoiding the evil Moja who will try and eat you.
In LocoRoco 2, Japan Studios has stuck to this winning formula, and added some extras to spice things up a a bit. One major new feature is the collection of music notes and the addition of a rhythm game section. Rolling over certain plants or areas will net you a bunch of musical notes that you try to collect throughout the stages. Other special areas will give you the opportunity to engage in a short rhythm game for even more musical notes. Each of the different Loco Rocos has a different rhythm that is uses when being played. They've kept these areas very simple, tapping out the short rhythms using only the circle button.
Another new feature are the sticker books. Throughout your journeys, some characters will drop "stickers." Once the level is completed, you can go to a special area of the main menu and use your stickers to fill out little sticker pictures. Once the picture is completed, you are rewarded with an item. Items you collect throughout the levels and in the sticker pages can then be used to build and furnish a grand house for your Mui Mui pals.
If you are a fan of the original then you probably need no encouragement from me to go out and pick this up. For those of you who haven't played before or whose only LocoRoco experience is Cocorecho on the PS3, I highly advise picking this up especially if you are in a mood to dust off your PSP. It's great fun and very satisfying and with a price tag of $19.99, you just can't beat it. LocoRoco 2 hits store shelves February 10.

oh, didn't realize locoroco 2 is not out yet in the states, received my european copy of it quite a while ago already...
As someone who loved LocoRoco but felt Cocoreccho was a huge disappointment, I'm glad to see that the sequel has more in common with the original. I'll definitely be picking this one up.
This series probably makes me the most sad that I don't have a PSP.
