Xbox Live Community Watch - 1/23/09
This week saw several community games released, 8 in fact, but unfortunately quality does not always follow quantity. There are still a few games worth checking out though. Toxic is one of the best of the bunch this week, with its simple yet fun puzzle gameplay that has you rotating blocks to clear them from the grid. If you're a fan of games like Feeding Frenzy then you might want to check out Fishbowl, which lets you compete against 3 other players to be the hungriest fish you can be. Or for something completely different, check out The Perfect Match, which makes you a matchmaker on a dating game show and you must interview the contestants to make the best match possible.
Unfortunately the rest of this week's offerings are marred by either technical problems or poor controls. Onslaught might be worth a look because of the unique, purposefully retro visual style, but some questionable control decisions keep me from fully recommending it. Valhyre is also worth mentioning for allowing you to play as a flying dragon in a 3rd person shooter, but it's a multiplayer only game and there's practically no one to play against. Toxic - 200 MS points. Rotate blocks to for squares and gain points. Build larger groups and cause chain reactions. But watch out for the creeping Toxic waste! Allow the screen to fill with Toxic squares and you lose!
Fishbowl - 200 MS points. A Fishbowl is a small world. Battle it out between your friends or family. Race for food, while avoiding mines, and gaining power ups to be the first to satisfy your hunger. Do you have what it takes to survive the bowl?
The Perfect Match - 400 MS points. Take on the role of MatchMaker, where you ask the Contestant and twenty Candidates questions about themselves and each other - all in hopes of finding the Contestant's "Perfect Match". With 3 different Match Levels to choose from, decide how inclusive you want to go in your efforts of finding the Perfect Match!
Onslaught - 200 MS points. The land of Gargore is a mass of warring kingdoms each with it's own army. However, even the mightiest army fears a 'Fanatic', solitary warriors who live to fight and conquer and are remembered according to the number of their victories and the greatness of their deeds. You are one such Fanatic, a magical warrior with the strength of an army.
Valhyre - 800 MS points. Valhyre is a third person shooter that allows 2 to 16 players to engage in combat in a 360 degree fantasy environment. Engaging on the ground and in the air, players can fight each other over 6 different play arenas and 3 different game play types. Valhyre was built from the ground up as a multiplayer experience and requires a Live Gold account to play fully.
RC-AirSim - 200 MS points. RC-AirSim is a radio-controlled model airplane flight simulator. Learn how to fly a model airplane with RC-AirSim. R/C model airplane pilots can keep their flying skills current or learn new maneuvers without risking a real model. RC-AirSim features realistic flight dynamics and aerodynamics, Doppler-correct sound, and 3D graphics. RC-AirSim has aileron, elevator, rudder, and throttle controls.
Sol Invasion - 200 MS points. In the future, your brain gets put inside an advanced warship. Aliens invade. Fight them off with a combination of guns, missiles, fighters, and supporting fleet ships in this shooter/strategy hybrid. Space is a cold place to die.
Ocean Scenes - 200 MS points. Ready for a tropical escape but can't get away? Let Ocean Scenes transform your TV into a window looking in on a virtual vacation.. in the comfort of your own living room! Choose from 18 combinations of scenery. Feel the movement of the waves and listen to the soothing sounds of the ocean. Relax in an ocean view beach house, or out on your own private stateroom balcony on a luxury cruise ship.
