Activision's New Bakugan Game Makes Me Feel Really Old

bakugan.jpg

Activision and Nelvana have just announced their plans to develop videogames based on the "breakout hit toy and wildly popluar action animated television series" Bakugan. Huh. I must be really out of touch with what's big with the kids these days, because I've never heard of this series before reading this press release. Aren't they all still playing Pokémon? I kid, I kid...

"Ever since Bakugan exploded in popularity, players have been clamoring for a video game version," said Doug Murphy, President, Nelvana and GM, Corus Kids. "We share our fans' excitement in doing battle in an interactive Bakugan world!"

Basically, Bakugan is the story of this kid named Dan who discovers magic cards (so it's like Yu-Gi-Oh!?) that let him and his friends control Bakugan Brawlers (so it's monsters like Pokémon?) to save the planet of Vestroia, and also Earth from ultimate destruction. Apparently it's airing on the Cartoon Network, and the resulting card games that include figures for the creatures won all kinds of awards from the Toy Industry Association. But I've still never heard of it!

Anyway, Bakugan is being developed by Japanese studio NOW Production, and will include "intense battles, the ability to create your own brawler, cartoon quality graphics and multiplayer combat." Oh, and it'll be out on nearly every system, including the Wii, DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and PS3. And I guess now I've heard of it...

lol obviously you don't work in retail with toys. They were crazy popular last year (the Tickle Me Elmo/Cabbage Patch Kids of 2008, if you will).

I had no idea what these were either, until my nephew asked for them for Christmas. I got a quick crash course in what they are by my brother, and I have to say, these are impressive toys.

They perfectly align both of the major elements of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon and added a dash of Transformers. It's no wonder these were among the hottest-selling toys last year.

And of course Georgie got a few. . . I'm almost persuaded to get myself some.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
